Whiz Kid: West Potomac Student Athlete, Mentor

Tamaric Wilson, a junior at West Potomac High School, is our whiz kid of the week

Tamaric Wilson, Junior West Potomac High School When you think of elementary school kids, football players usually don’t come to mind. However, when it comes to Tamaric Wilson “usually” just doesn’t cut it. The junior West Potomac High School football player has been spending his Wednesday’s from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at the Bucknell Elementary School mentoring program. The program pairs 60 high school students with 60 elementary school students to help with homework and enrichment activities. Wilson has been working with a fifth grader since the beginning of the year. “I help him wind down after school…I just like to give back,” Wilson said. Wilson’s football coach recommended he join the program. He has been functioning as one of the 10 leaders…

Adam Neulight Fourth Grade, 9 Years Old Hollin Meadows Elementary School Adam Neulight spends his lunch toiling away on solar panels, robots and wind turbines. He has a never-ending interest in electrical engineering and tinkers with ideas for alternative energy. He’s also in the fourth grade. “He’s been working on projects like this for the past few years,” said Jason Pittman, Neulight’s science teacher at Hollin Meadows Elementary School. Neulight’s interest in science stems from his father who is an electrical engineer. According to Neulight, his father, Eric, worked with the class on solar panels that would harness energy in the school’s garden. Our Whiz kid of the Week is Jennifer Wilder of West Potomac High

Jennifer Wilder, High School Senior School: West Potomac High School Accomplishment: Winner of the National Scholastic Art Award Gold Medal Wilder is known for her sense of humor and it certainly comes out in her art. As a senior at West Potomac High School, Wilder has put a different spin on the animal world. “She personifies animals in a tongue-in-cheek human ways,” said Amy Stoll, Wilder’s art teacher. “As a kid I saw a lot of Disney movies and a lot of the animation for children involves animals,” Wilder said of her work. But Wilder moves her artwork into a different realm blending real animals with mythological ones and then adding a spice of her signature humor.
