Bulova: FCC Report Validates Concerns Over Verizon 911 Service

Report issued late last week says outage following June derecho in Northern Virginia and other parts of the country was "unacceptable."

The Federal Communications Commission plans to introduce new rules to strengthen the reliability and resiliency of 9-1-1 communications networks during disasters in the wake of a storm last summer that left Northern Virginia without 9-1-1 service, the federal agency said in a news release this week “These failures are unacceptable and the FCC will do whatever is necessary to ensure the reliability of 9-1-1," Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski said. The announcement late last week coincides with the regulatory agency's release of a report (attached with this story) about the 9-1-1 service failure June 29 to 30, after the derecho storm hit Northern Virginia and other parts of the country.  The derecho that struck …

Verizon: 'We're Ready for Sandy'

Telecommunications company has spent months making improvements in hopes of avoiding another 911 system failure.

An estimated 2.3 million people lost access to 911 service this summer when the area was hit by a derecho. Now, with Hurricane Sandy lined up to potentially slam Northern Virginia, Verizon — the company that provides the emergency communication service — is confident that the long list of improvements it has made in the months since are enough to weather the storm. "We're ready for Sandy," Verizon spokesman Harry J. Mitchell told Patch in an interview Friday evening. In late September, Verizon released an 11-page Moving Forward presentation (see the PDF attached at the right) outlining the issues with its power system and internal and external communication that contributed to the 911 system failure — and the steps that have been or will …

Forecast: La Niña Weather Pattern Causing Warmer Fall Temperatures

Northern Virginia's extreme weather started last winter, meteorologists say.

Derechos, blizzards, hurricanes, thunderstorms, extreme heat...is there any wacky weather Northern Virginia hasn't seen in recent years? This past summer saw enough 100-plus degree days to make 2012 the most intense in 141 years of record-keeping according to the Capital Weather Gang. “Starting from this past winter, we had temperatures that were much above normal,” said Ken Widelski of the National Weather Service. “It was an abnormally warm winter, followed by a cooler than normal spring and we definitely had our periods of hot weather over the summer.” As for this June's derecho, it’s typical climatologically for this area to see a derecho every couple of years, Widelski explained. What was unique about this year's derecho was the …

Dominion Officials Discuss Derecho Outage, Line Burial

More than 65 percent of distribution facilities in the region are already underground.

Burying power lines throughout Virginia remains out of the question economically, Dominion officials told local residents during a town hall meeting Tuesday night. About 75 people attended the town hall, convened by Del. Scott Surovell and state Sens. Adam Ebbin and Toddy Puller, at Sherwood Regional Library. The meeting provided a forum for locals to discuss Dominion’s response to the June 29 derecho, which left some area residents without power for up to a week. Rodney Blevins, Dominion vice president of operations, said a 2005 study on estimated conversion to buried lines found it would cost $80 billion statewide, or $800,000 per mile for an average cost of $27,000 per electric customer. A 2009 study found underground lines cost five to…

The cost stated per customer seems extremely high. How on earth could the cost be $27,000 per customer to bury lines? This might be a wonderful opportunity to get people 'back to work' and try other companies rather than the "contract electricians" who are running price estimates up. If landscaping is an issue, do people want power or perfect shrubbery? I know it costs considerably more, but that…   more ›

Should We Bury Our Power Lines in Mount Vernon and Lee?

Del. Surovell will host a town hall meeting about burying power lines in Mount Vernon and Lee.

Two months ago, my wife and children were out of town so I decided to work at my office in the City of Fairfax until about 9:30 p.m. As I drove home from Fairfax, I was listening to WTOP and didn’t notice anything unusual other than a thunderstorm warning for the far western suburbs.  Around 10:30 p.m. the wind started blowing and the power went out.  I called my wife after our generator didn’t turn on and looked outside. The 100 year-old trees in my yard were swinging around like Hurricane Isabel and it didn’t stop for fifteen minutes. That’s when I knew this was no ordinary storm.  The next day, as I disseminated information and checked out Dominion’s outage map, it was obvious that we had a major situation on our hands. As I walked my …

This seems quite a bargain compared to the costs quoted for burying the lines in DC and Montgomery County. I would love to see these lines buried. The aesthetic, safety and reliability benefits dwarf the $3500 per household cost. Is this the sort of thing that can be financed long-term with a bond issue and then repaid through a property tax surcharge?   more ›

Fairfax County Asks for Feedback From Derecho Response

Residents and business owners are encouraged to take part in an emergency information survey.

The Fairfax County Office of Emergency Management is asking for feedback from county residents and businesses to help assess the county's response to the June 29 derecho storm, which downed tree and power lines and left many Alexandria-area homes without power for days. The storm also knocked out some of the county's emergency resonse system, including 911 services. County officials are asking residents to complete the short survey, found here. The survey should take only several minutes to complete and is open through Sept. 7. The survey is part of the official review of the storm response and will be used for department's after-action report on the derecho event and how Fairfax County Government responded.
