Huntington Metro Station Makes List of Stations with Most Crime

WMATA released the security report Monday.

The Huntington metro station made the top ten list of stations with the most crime in Virginia, according to the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority 2012 security report. Most of the crime increase on the Metro system wide from 2011 to 2012 is attributable to a 30 percent increase in snatches of small electronic devices and pickpockets, according to WMATA. There were 671 pick-pocketing incidents and electronic “snatchings” on the Metro system overall in 2012, up from 520 incidents in 2011. Metro Transit Police Chief Michael Taborn will discuss the report Thursday during his security report to the Metro Board Safety and Security Committee. The report was released to the public Monday. Metro Momentum Offers Expansive Plans for System's Future

The new strategic plan aims to take Metro through 2040.

A $26 billion strategic plan released by Metro last week gave a glimpse at the agency's vision — which includes several substantial recommendations like new Potomac River crossings and new metro stations — for taking the transit agency into 2025, 2040 and beyond. Called Metro Momentum, the plan acknowledged piecemeal fixes to an aging system are barely scraping the surface of the transit agency's needs and a growing DC region, whose population is expected grow 30 percent over the next three decades.  "Our customers know that many trains, stations and buses are already crowded and we need to begin planning now to prevent that from worsening and prepare for more riders,” Metro General Manager and CEO Richard Sarles said in a press release.  …

Walking Routes Downtown on Inauguration Day

Metro offers several route suggestions to get to the National Mall, the parade route and to the White House on Inauguration Day.

Whether you are attending the inauguration on the National Mall, taking in the parade along Pennsylvania Avenue or cheering the President's return at the White House, you can expect to do a lot of walking on Inauguration Day. Between metro station closures, parade route street closures and bus route changes, you will be using your own two feet to get you where you want to be once you arrive downtown on Metro. Inauguration Day 2009 set the all time ridership record for Metro at about 1.54 million trips on rail and bus combined. The rail ridership in 2009 alone was 1.12 million trips. Metro is preparing for a crowded system this year as well, spokesman Dan Stessel told Patch. WMATA estimates 600,000 to 800,000 people will use Metrorail for the 2013 inauguration events. Metro has been working with external partners like the U.S. Secret Service, U.S. Park Police and other agencies involved in inauguration activities to help alleviate some of the crowding that plagued metro during the 2009 inauguration. Taking the Metro to get around this weekend? Blue, Yellow and Green line trains will operate on normal weekend schedules. If you are taking the Red or Orange lines this weekend, you will want to read on. According to a Metro news release: Red Line Red Line trains will single track between through two work zones: Throughout the weekend, trains between Shady Grove and Glenmont will operate every 24 minutes.  Between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, additional trains will operate between Grosvenor and Judiciary Square, resulting in service an average of every 12 minutes between these stations.  Customers traveling through either work zone should allow 15 minutes of additional travel time. Metro's Inauguration SmarTrip Cards Available

Sign up now to get your special commemorative Inauguration Day fare card.

Patch Staff Report Metro has begun accepting orders for commemorative SmarTrip cards for the January inauguration of President Barack Obama. "Inauguration Day, January 21, 2013" and President Obama's picture, along with "America Makes History Again" adorn the cards, which are $15. That's only $1 more than a one-day paper pass, according to a news release from the Washington Area Metropolitan Transit Authority. The cards come pre-loaded with a one-day pass that provides unlimited Metrorail travel on the first day it is used. It can also be used as a "flash pass" for unlimited Metrobus transportation on Inauguration Day, the news release states. Cards are expected to ship in mid-December.
