Residents Voice Concerns About Master Plan for Westgrove Park

The Fairfax County Park Authority hosted a public comment meeting Tuesday evening at Belle View Elementary School.

About 100 residents attended the public comment meeting Tuesday evening hosted by the Fairfax County Park Authority at Belle View Elementary. FCPA discussed the master plan for the Westgrove Park, which became available online six weeks ago for residents to review before the meeting. The plan received mixed reviews according to the concerns voiced during Tuesday's meeting. Westgrove residents commented on their concerns with barking dogs disturbing members of residential areas adjacent to the park and with the size of the area designated as the off-leash dog area (OLDA) in the master plan. During the moderated comment portion of the meeting, Mary Jo Detweiler with Friends of Westgrove Park said the group is happy for the opportunity to …

This story, especially the headline, is very misleading. I was at the meeting and although several of the speakers voiced concerns, the vast majority of the people in attendance and many the speakers were in favor of the draft master plan for Westgrove Park. Most people were happy with the plan 'as is' or had minor issues or tweeks to the plan that they felt should be considered.   more ›

Park Authority Public Meeting Tuesday on Westgrove Park Plan

The meeting will take place at Belle View Elementary School.

(Editor's note: This story originally ran April 1, but we are re-featuring it since the meeting is this week, on Tuesday.) The Fairfax County Park Authority will host a public comment meeting on April 30 to gather input on the draft master plan for Westgrove Park.  The current draft master plan for the park is here in a PDF format.  At the meeting, staff will provide background information about the park, current site conditions, and elements of the draft master plan. A moderated public comment session will follow staff presentations. Located at 6801 Fort Hunt Road in Alexandria, the park was used as a sewage treatment plant until the late 1980s when operations were ceased; any related facilities were either removed or buried onsite, …

Why does the Fairfax County Park Authority (FCPA) act like it does......because it is an "Authority" as set in VA law by Virginia code 15.2-5700(et al) paragraph. This code (law to us normals) sets the limits and rules for the park authorities across the state. As a result of being an Authority, the FCPA can not be reached by the public - i.e. the members are voted in, etc. Google the code and …   more ›

Local Residents Air Ideas for Westgrove Park

The Fairfax County Park Authority held a public meeting Monday evening.

Off-leash dog park. Natural area. Rugby field. Small lake. Mount Vernon District residents suggested these and other uses for the future of Westgrove Park Monday evening during a public meeting convened by the Fairfax County Park Authority. The park authority is beginning a master plan process for the park, located off Fort Hunt Road just south of Belle View Elementary School. The 21-acre gated park — the former site of a sewage treatment plan — has been gated and largely unused for years. On July 19, following several delays due to procedural technicalities, the Fairfax County Planning Commission approved using 2 acres of the park as an off-leash dog park on an interim use basis for two years. Local environmentalists had opposed the dog …

Commission OKs Off-Leash Dog Park

The park will sit on 1.75 acres at Westgrove Park off Fort Hunt Road.

The Fairfax County Planning Commission approved on Thursday the interim use of part of Westgrove Park as an off-leash dog park. Commissioner Earl Flanagan, Mount Vernon district representative, said the dog park received overwhelming support from nearby community associations and Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland. Sandy Stallman, a manager with the Fairfax County Park Authority, said the park authority had passed a motion in favor of the off-leash dog park and that the state does not require a master plan be in place before an interim use is approved, a sticking point in the debate over the park’s use. At-large commissioner James Hart, who voted against the dog park, said he was concerned that the park authority still had no …

Park Authority to Resume Plan Process for Westgrove Park

A public meeting will be held July 30 at Belle View Elementary School.

The Fairfax County Park Authority is once again taking up the master planning process for the future of Westgrove Park, located off Fort Hunt Road. The park authority will hold a public information meeting at 7 p.m. July 30 in the cafeteria at Belle View Elementary School. The school is located at 6701 Fort Hunt Road, just north of Westgrove Park. Formerly a sewage treatment plant, Westgrove is a 21.3-acre undeveloped park. Recently, local residents have pushed to convert 1.75 acres of the park into an interim off-leash dog park. The Fairfax County Planning Commission has voted twice to postpone the decision about whether to allow the dog park, noting that language in the park authority’s request requires a master plan process be under way…
