West Potomac Wolverines: 54-14 Win Over Annandale Atoms

'Explosive' Wolverine offense stuns in away game Friday night.

After keeping things close in the first half Friday, Annandale couldn't contain the explosive West Potomac offense and suffered a 54-14 loss. Wolverines running back Demornay Pierson-El showed why he's an All-Met candidate as he added to his staggering season numbers. After being held to 40 yards in the first half - but still finding the end zone twice - the junior erupted for 141 yards,  three more touchdowns and finished with just under 300 all-purpose yards. For the Atoms, Steve Schwartz completed 12 of 29 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown, and Jack Johnson and Marcus Walton combined for 190 yards rushing for the Atoms.  Despite the success in the ground game, Annandale couldn't create enough opportunities to put the ball in the end …

The Jeremiah Davis Era Begins at West Potomac

Former Annandale and Penn State player talks with Patch about his new endeavor.

For the first time in eight years, a new head football coach will pace West Potomac’s sidelines this fall. Jeremiah Davis takes over for Eric Henderson, who parted ways with the school this spring. Davis, an Annandale High School alum, played defensive end for head coach Joe Paterno at Penn State from 2000 to 2004 and has served as Annandale’s defensive coordinator the past seven seasons. Patch sat down with the 29-year-old head coach, husband and father of three to talk about the upcoming season. What are some of the things that you have done in your short time at West Potomac to establish your coaching staff and to instill your new philosophy with your players? The first thing we have done is to try to establish a culture of having good …

Henderson Family Ties

As his sons transfer to Lake Braddock, former West Potomac football coach Eric Henderson remains optimistic about family's future.

At least three familar faces from West Potomac High School's football team will be absent from the field when the 2012 season kicks off this fall. West Potomac history teacher Eric Henderson guided the Wolverines to an 8-4 record and a Virginia AAA Division 6 Northern Region semifinal appearance last season. But on March 7, Henderson was informed he was being relieved of coaching duties, which came as a shock to him, his family and the entire Wolverine football community. “I was given no reason,” said Henderson, who is still teaching at WPHS. “They wanted to go in a different direction. And you know what, that is perfectly acceptable. Coaching contracts are unrenewable, not guaranteed from year-to-year. So if the prerogative of the …

Friends and family gathered to admire student art

As a finale to the weeklong West Potomac High School senior art show students, friends and family gathered for a closing night reception on Tuesday. The student artists mingled throughout the crowd and discussed their work with interested attendees. "I'm impressed with what they came up with. This is the most technically strong and conceptually creative group of kids," AP Studio teacher Amy Stoll said. "They all have their own personality, and a little bit of their alter ego is revealed in their work. It's who they are. It's an extension of them." The show featured work from over 40 artists in AP Photography, AP Studio and Art 3 and 4. Water color, copic markers, sculpture, wire, ink, digital illustration and painting were all used to …

'It's Personal' Dance And Film Festival

The West Potomac Academy performance features two hours of vibrant dance and original short films

You wouldn't think that a short film festival and a dance show could be performed simultaneously, but West Potomac Academy teachers Nancy Mantelli and Courtney Betzel organized such a thing spectacularly. 'It's Personal,' a film and dance festival revolving around moments, things, or people that impacted the student's lives shows Friday, May 13, and Saturday, May 4, at 7 P.M. for $5 in advance or $7 at the door. "In the professional world, when a client pays for a project, it is up to you to dissect their needs and figure out a way to get it done," Mantelli said. "That is what we expect from these kids, as they work together with both classes to create a piece of art that works within the confines of the festival." Nearly 100 students …

New Program Aims For Athlete Success in the Classroom

The director of the "Stepping it Up" program is influenced by his own experiences as a high school athlete

When Earnest Fingers was attending Oxon Hill High School in Maryland and playing on the basketball team, academics weren’t his priority. Until he flunked out. Fingers remembers that experience vividly, more than a decade later. “It was embarrassing,” he said.  “I hated high school. It just didn’t make sense to me. All I heard was ‘you have to go to school, you have to go to school.’ ” Now a few miles away, across the bridge, Fingers wants to make sure young athletes don’t get caught in the same rut. He’s director of a new program at West Potomac High School, called “Stepping it Up,” which aims to get students on the right path academically. The program was funded in large part with a $19,000 grant from the Washington Redskins, which …

An event taking place up Route One hopes to brighten this dark and drab February week. The five-day, free event features over 30 designers, including two West Potomac alumni, and runs through Saturday, Feb. 5, from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. “What I love about it is the expression of the designers and the variety,” producer Maggie Francois said. “West Potomac students are working backstage, and it’s great for them. They are networking, seeing how the business works, seeing event etiquette and learning.” The Crystal City Business Improvement District (BID) sponsored event will boast a different local celebrity host each night, …
