Photos: The 2013 Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards

Volunteers from across the county were honored Thursday at an awards ceremony.

On Thursday, 154 individuals and groups were honored at the 21st Annual Fairfax County Volunteer Service Awards. The ceremony was attended by hundreds at the Waterford in Springfield. Volunteers were nominated in three categories: a competitive volunteer service award, a community champion award and benchmark award for a volunteer who contributed a certain number of hours to a cause in Fairfax County. In Remembrance of Sept. 11, Volunteer Fairfax Benefits Final Salute

The volunteer organization organized a service project for the nonprofit Saturday.

Volunteer Fairfax is assisting homeless female veterans through a service project Saturday to benefit the nonprofit Final Salute. According to Volunteer Fairfax, there are an estimated 13,000 homeless female veterans in the United States. The organization recruited service members and their spouses to help ready a home, near the Huntington Metro Station, where six veterans will live. “The impact of this project is huge and is ongoing,” said Volunteer Fairfax spokeswoman Jessica Hubbard in a statement. “With the anniversary of 9/11 tomorrow, this is a great example of how to serve in remembrance.” This service project was the launch of Volunteer Fairfax’s newest program, Stars, Stripes & Service. Huntington-Belle Haven Patch: A Hybla Valley woman has been arrested in conjunction with a fatal road rage incident that occurred on May 4. Police have charge Gloria Alfreda McMillan, 32, of Hybla Valley with a felony hit and run that left a 21-year-old woman dead Friday on Harrison Lane in Groveton.  The former owner of Crossed Canoes in Belle View is one of three judges for the 49th Annual Woodlawn Needlework Exhibition, which opens today. Local Community Champion Advocates for Health and Human Services

Louise Cleveland serves on local health and human services committees.

Mount Vernon resident Louise Cleveland describes herself as a curious person. Her curiosity has been an asset in her participation in local health and human services committees. It has certainly paid off—she has been recognized as the 2012 Mount Vernon District Community Champion. Cleveland was nominated by Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland and was honored in April at the Volunteer Fairfax 20th Annual Volunteer Service Awards. "Louise Cleveland is one of those extraordinary volunteers who have made such a difference in the lives of hundreds and hundreds of people," said Hyland.
