Fifth and last in the blockbuster film series debuts, based on novels by Stephenie Meyer. Rated PG-13.
AMC Hoffmann near the Eisenhower Metro station is showing "Breaking Dawn Part 2" practically around the clock Friday, starting with a showing at 9:15 a.m. with 30-plus showings until midnight on multiple screens. It debuted there — and everywhere else — Thursday night to large crowds. The big finale of the Twilight Saga needs no help from anyone beyond their fans, thank you very much. You need but look to the scores of Twihards who lined up at movie theaters around the world over a week before the premiere. These fans can rest easy. Director Bill Condon (Gods and Monsters, Dreamgirls) gives them exactly what they expect. For the rest of the planet, it feels cliched and fangless until a rousing last act climbs so over the top it makes it…

Fans won't have to stay out quite so late this year, on a school night, to catch the debut of the last in the popular "Twilight" film series.
Fans waiting to see The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn, Part 2 when it debuts Thursday will get a chance to see the premiere without staying up until 3 a.m. this year. Previous premiers of the films (the first — Twilight—debuted in November 2008) in Northern Virginia have seen lines of middle-school and high-school students at the midnight shows. Presumably there was lots of yawning the next day. The blockbuster films, based on the four books by Stephenie Meyer, star Kristen Stewart as Bella, an average girl who meets Edward, a vampire (played by Robert Pattinson) and Jacob (played by Taylor Lautner), a werewolf. The film debuting this week will be the fifth and final in the series. It is the second half of Breaking Dawn, Part 1 and is based…

San Diego Comic-Con opens with huge crowds, swag and high hopes.
SAN DIEGO—Whenever "What is Comic-Con?" floats out into the air, it shocks Cinema Siren into speechlessness. San Diego Comic-Con, (SDCC or just "Comic-Con" for those in the know), is the largest gathering for entertainment and pop culture in the world, and happens in San Diego every July at this time. It garners so much press coverage and we at ArtInsights have so many friends and colleagues whose livelihoods depend on a successful SDCC, it's hard for me to imagine anyone still in the dark about its existence. The geeks of the world know all about it. One certainly can't wander into an Apple Store, for example, and have any of the employees not give great sighs and groans when one informs them one is going to Comic-Con… So, as the 39th …

Cinema Siren says formula is 'mope, brood, sparkle.'
Let's be honest here…Cinema Siren loves sparkle as much as the next diva, but on the best of days the Twilight saga has to be reviewed on a curve. It was never meant to be Shakespeare, or even "True Blood." Those of you who are on Team "Eric" will never find enough to sink your teeth into with the books and films Twi-hards hold so dear. That being said, "Breaking Dawn" will likely satisfy earnest fans of the series, and offer fewer eye-rolls to those accompanying them on their celluloid journey. The filmmakers know what is expected of them. Cheerleaders for Team Jacob will offer up a pack-wide howl at knowing Taylor Lautner's bare chest is exposed no more than 45 seconds into the film. Not much happens in this installment, comparatively. …

Love your insight on SDCC, Leslie! I always think, "I would LOVE to go to that some day," but reading about the crowds makes me think perhaps I'd just rather live it vicariously through you. :) Have fun and tell Michael I say hi!   more ›
