REMINDER: West Potomac Academy, Alexandria Community Dance Present 'The Nutcracker'

The dance groups will perform a modern version of 'The Nutcracker' starting Thursday evening.

West Potomac Academy and Alexandria Community Dance will join together to present their fourth annual performance of The Nutcracker, the traditional holiday story with a modern twist. Performances will be Nov. 29, 30 and Dec. 1 at West Potomac High School. West Potomac Academy’s dance students will participate in the entire production, both on stage and behind the scenes, and Advanced Dance students will have featured performances. The performance will include ballet, pointe, tap, jazz, lyrical, modern, and hip-hop dance and gymnastics. More than 100 students from the Alexandria area auditioned to be a part of the performance. Photos: 'The Nutcracker' Dress Rehearsal at West Potomac

The auditorium at West Potomac High School was abuzz with activity Sunday as dancers rehearsed for the upcoming performance of The Nutcracker. Dozens of boys and girls of all ages will take the stage Nov. 29 for the first performance of this year's production. This year is the fourth year that West Potomac Academy and Alexandria Community Dance have co-produced The Nutcracker. "It's truly a community effort," said choreographer Gennifer DiFilippo. "Some of the kids are just here because they want to be in The Nutcracker, and they don't have to drive to DC to be in it." Tickets for The Nutcracker are currently on sale, $10 for students and $12 for adults in advance. At the door, tickets for students are $12 and $15 for adults. For more …

Academy dance students partner with Alexandria Community Dance to produce a delightful show

Christmastime inevitably means a blizzard of quaint holiday performances that demand our attention, but The Nutcracker at West Potomac High School far surpasses your traditional Christmas show. Over one hundred dancers and their families worked tirelessly to create a beautiful work of art that was fun, family friendly and introduced a classic ballet to the next generation of dancers. The show opened conventionally with Clara leading all the young guests in games and dances, before receiving The Nutcracker from her quirky uncle and falling asleep by the Christmas tree. I saw this show. It was absolutely the worst dance recital I've ever seen. The quality of the choreography was elementary at best, and it appeared that the dance instruction is seriously lacking in effectively teaching children the most basic dance skills. I felt terrible for the parents that had to fork out any money for that production. Shame on the instructors!!! That was not dancing!!!   more ›
