FCPS Budget Cuts Strain Athletics

Budget includes cuts to athletics and new fees to increase revenue

Editor's Note: This story is part of a nationwide Patch series probing the economy's effect on local schools. Fairfax County Public Schools is tightening its financial belt for the 2011 fiscal year as it deals with dwindling support from local governments—and that includes changes to athletics. According to the Department of Financial Services, the FCPS receives 74.7 percent of its budget from local governments as compared to the average of 50 percent for other Virginia school districts. As an immediate result, the district is preparing for the worst as local governments across the country look to trim costs where possible.
