An invitation-only event Thursday night featured local breweries and wineries and even an appearance by a famous chef.
Invited guests received a sneak preview Thursday night of the renovated Belle View grocery store at the Safeway Spring Social event. The gathering celebrated the grand re-opening of the store, which was closed for the past six months for renovations. Guests sampled some of Virginia's best beers and wines, and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres including some of Safeway’s best Consumer Brands products. Special guest Chef Huda, a recent contestant on ABC’s The Taste, served some of her specialty dishes and Veggy Art’s James Parker created art from produce. The Belle View Safeway will re-open on Friday morning. The store will reopen after being closed for the past six months for renovations, including an expansion of the store. This is the second expansion that the store has undergone since Safeway acquired the store from another grocer in August 1984 as a 28,000 square foot facility, according to a news release from Safeway. The previous expansion occurred in 1997, enlarging the interior to 39,888 square feet. The newly renovated store will feature an expanded beer and wine department; full-service deli, meat, seafood and floral departments; from scratch bakery; an expanded produce section featuring approximately 150 varieties of organic items and a Starbucks coffee bar. Local stores are still stocked with items.
Mount Vernon and Greater Alexandria residents are getting a head start on preparing for Tueday night's storm. Safeway located in Engleside Plaza has already seen a rush of customers picking up supplies in anticipation of the storm. Water, juice, and nonperishables are still available. According to a store employee, the freezers were broken but are now fixed and will be re-stocked later tonight. The Shoppers at the Mount Vernon Plaza also has plenty of supplies available. According to a store employee, the rush has "already started." Giant Food of Landover, Md. issued the following statement. "In advance of a major weather event, customers typically purchase what we consider staple items – milk, bread, eggs, batteries, and bottled water."

After months of construction, the Belle View Safeway will re-open next month.
The Safeway at Belle View Shopping Center will reopen March 15, according to store employees. Safeway closed Sept. 29 for major renovations. The renovated store will have an additional 5,300 square feet, for a total of 45,000 square feet. The exterior of the store was completely revamped. The renovated store will feature new meat and seafood department service, a Starbucks kiosk and an expanded bakery. Six self-checkout stands will also be added. The supermarket is located at 1624 Belle View Blvd.

The program, which launched this month, will give shoppers points from store purchases to use on gas purchases.
Safeway has partnered with ExxonMobil to start rewarding shoppers in Northern Virginia for their purchases at Safeway stores by cutting costs at the pump. This month, Safeway will launch their Reward Points loyalty program which will give shoppers points toward savings on gas at ExxonMobil stations. “Safeway listens to its shoppers, and we understand the importance of stretching grocery dollars,” said Mir Aamir, president of Customer Loyalty and Digital Technologies at Safeway in a press release from the company. “By teaming up with ExxonMobil, we’re able to thank our customers with a loyalty program that makes two frequent and critical purchases lead to real savings.” Shoppers will be able to earn rewards points on certain purchases. Grocery store facelift is coming along.
Patch stopped by this week to see how the Safeway renovation at Belle View Shopping Center is coming along. It seems to be progressing and workers at the project said this week that the target completion date is on track for March 2013. A local shopper looking at Christmas trees for sale in the nearby parking lot said she can't wait for the store to re-open. The grocery store began renovations in late September and is closed until renovations are complete. The new store will feature a new meat and seafood department, Starbucks coffee and a bakery. Though I was responding to your "pretty fancy" comment, rather than comparing prices, is your experience that Safeway's prices are closr to Balducci's than to Giant's? That is counter to anything I've experienced. Pricewise, in ascending order it goes SFW, Giant, Safeway and Harris Teeter, with Giant and Safeway virtually tied.
