As parents throughout the region wrap up iPod Touches, smartphones and tablets for their children, let's look at the issues in general and the FTC's latest report on privacy in apps designed for children.
There are going to be a lot of Internet-enabled devices under Christmas trees and wrapped up for Hanukkah. According to Nielsen Research, the iPad is the number one item on the most-desired electronics list for kids this year. Following behind is the iPod touch, iPhone, tablet and other computers. Add in any smartphone and a lot of kids want devices that can play apps available from Apple's App store and the Google play store. While the question of whether most-wanted will be the most received is a separate discussion, we all know that many kids will soon be dowloading their favorite games as Apps on their new devices. Questions of content, payment and ground rules for both screen time and appropriate use all need to be considered. …

Police officers will deploy next week in an effort to prevent shoplifting and other crimes; safety tips for shopping during Black Friday.
It’s that time of year again. Consumers are busting down the doors of retail stores everywhere. Unfortunately, the holiday season is the perfect time for criminals to be on the lookout for freebies. People are indulging in holiday shopping, and it’s not uncommon for the crime rate to increase throughout the season. In preparation for the increase in shoppers and crime in the Northern Virginia area, the Fairfax County Police Department will send out their Retail Anti-Theft teams starting next week. “Every holiday season FCPD deploys our Retail Anti-Theft teams,” said Lucy Caldwell, public information officer for the department. “These are officers who are assigned specifically to malls and retail outlets throughout our county. Back to school time is about new beginnings. It is a chance to get started on the right foot or readjust habits that we have all slipped into. Don't Text & Drive! Texting while driving is dangerous and unfortunately incredibly common. In a recent survey, 97% of teens say that texting and driving is dangerous but 43% admit to doing it. And it isn't just teens, kids learn from their parents and their parents are texting. 77% of teens have seen their parents text and drive. AT&T is making a push to heighten awareness of the dangers of texting and driving called "It Can Wait".
