Newt and Callista Gingrich to Sign Books at Mount Vernon

Newt and Callista will both sign copies of their latest books.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and his wife, Callista, will be signing copies of their latest books at Historic Mount Vernon on Saturday. Newt Gingrich will be signing copies of his latest historical novel titled "Victory at Yorktown: A Novel," the last book in the George Washington series. The book is described in this excerpt from the Mount Vernon Estate: "It is 1781, and Washington and his army have spent three years in a bitter stalemate, engaging in near constant skirmishing against the British.  Washington decides to embark on one of the most audacious moves in American military history.  He will take nearly his entire army out of New Jersey and New York, and force march it more than three hundred miles in complete secrecy…

Santorum Campaign Signs Join Newt's on Huntington Median

Despite not being on next week's primary ballot, Northern Virginia residents Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich have presidential campaign signage on Huntington Avenue.

With just a week until Virginia voters go to cast their ballot in the 2012 primary, a few signs promoting former Sen. Rick Santorum have sprouted up on a median along Huntington Avenue. 'Newt 2012' signs touting support for former Speaker Newt Gingrich appeared along the same street at the end of January. Although Gingrich and Santorum claim Fairfax County as home—Gingrich in McLean and Santorum in Great Falls—neither of the candidates cleared the requirements to get on next week's primary ballot in Virginia.  Only former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Congressman Ron Paul will be on it. No write-ins are allowed. Ron Paul will be in Springfield Tuesday evening as the Michigan and Arizona primary ballots are counted. Absentee …

University Survey: Virginians Not Satisfied with GOP Primary Choices

Virginia's Independent voters go for Romney or Santorum over Obama.

Virginians aren’t happy with the choices on the GOP ballot for the Republican presidential primary coming up on March 6, according to a new poll conducted by Christopher Newport University. Conducted for the Richmond Times-Dispatch, the statewide survey shows that 57 percent of Republicans and Independents are not happy with the choices. The university’s Wason Center for Public Policy conducted the survey of 1,018 registered voters from Feb. 4-13. The candidates on the Super Tuesday ballot are former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Texas Congressman Ron Paul. Former Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum did not turn in enough signatures required to get onto the ballot in Virginia. In the survey, a proposed …

I'm not happy with the choices because I'm not happy with the GOP platform. I can't vote for the Dems who are controlled by the unions and who want us to become a European style socialist nation. I don't like that the GOP is intent on imposing its social morality on us. They aren't listening to the Tea Party people who want to return to personal freedom and small government. But worst of all, …   more ›

Back on the Trail: McDonnell Campaigns for Romney in Florida

Morning campaign stop a few days before Florida primary includes appearances by former GOP presidential nominee John McCain and actor Jon Voight

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell flew to Pensacola, Fla. to campaign Saturday morning for GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney. The Florida primary is Tuesday. McDonnell, who teamed up with Romney last weekend as well, appeared along with 2008 GOP presidential nominee John McCain and actor Jon Voight (Angelina Jolie's dad) before a crowd at a Florida Panhandle restaurant called The Fish Shack. McDonnell's eldest daughter, Jeanine, one of his five children, came along to campaign. She has served as a U.S. Army platoon officer in Iraq. The Pensacola area is home to a lot of military and is home to the Pensacola Naval Air Station. Chairman of the Republican Governors' Association, McDonnell is rumored to be a top pick for the VP slot. He was in …

Political Season's Greetings

Virginia Senate candidates send holiday cheer, family photos

On Friday, the campaigns of former Gov. George Allen (R) (also a former U.S. senator), and former Gov. Tim Kaine (D), who are running against each other for the U.S. Senate, sent holiday greetings to supporters. Holiday cards, messages and photos from politicians—especially those running for office—tend to get scrutinized more often than the average greeting. The official White House holiday card, which was started in 1953 with President Eisenhower, has made news this year, after it was attacked by Sarah Palin, former Alaska governor and 2008 vice presidential nominee because it was bereft of family or a holiday tree, and only showed the family dog, Bo. Palin told Fox News that she found it "odd" that the card emphasizes the dog instead of…

A Break from Iowa: Newt, Callista Sign Books at Washington's Estate

GOP presidential contender Newt Gingrich and his spouse signed books for two hours Saturday afternoon in Northern Virginia.

GOP presidential front-runner Newt Gingrich and his wife Callista took a break from the hustings of Iowa Saturday to sign books at Mount Vernon and surprised quite a few tourists. They made an appearance at the historic site to promote Callista's new children's book, "Sweet Land of Liberty." The Mount Vernon bookstore sold out all of its 200 or so copies during the book-signing. Those who stood in line got signatures from both Gingriches, who signed books from 2-4 p.m. Saturday. The Gingriches were sacrificing campaign time in Iowa, where the 68-year-old former speaker of the House is locked in a fierce battle with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and Rep. Ron Paul of Texas for supremacy in Iowa's first-in-the-nation presidential …

As Herman Cain Suspends Campaign, He Leaves Behind Support in Virginia

State supporters donated $40,685 to Cain campaign

When presidential candidate Herman Cain suspended his campaign Saturday, he left behind some supporters in Virginia. In all, Virginia supporters donated $40,685 to help elect Cain, a man who has never held public office but started the Godfather Pizza chain and then headed up the National Restaurant Association in D.C. The Cain campaign has raised more than $5 million nationally, $5,340,967 in all. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney still tops the GOP presidential contender list in individual donations from Virginia, with $894,838 from supporters in the state, according to the Center for Responsive Politics. The amounts are the latest reported as of Sept. 30, before Newt Gingrich's recent surge. (Gingrich now leads in the Iowa Poll, …

In all, Virginia supporters of Obama have given his re-election campaign a total of $724,465. The "221xx" ZIP code area in McLean was split, giving to both Democrats and Republicans, with $131,000 going to Mitt Romney and $134,000 to Obama. Newt Gingrich's McLean-area neighbors donated $26,900 to his campaign. They donated more ($43,000) to Tim Pawlenty.
