Sarku Japan Restaurant Opens in Kings Crossing on Richmond Highway

A Japanese restaurant opened its doors in the Kings Crossing Shopping Center Monday.

Sarku Japan has opened its first street concept restaurant Monday in Virginia in the Kings Crossing Shopping Center on Richmond Highway. The restaurant is traditionally located in mall food courts, but has expanded the brand with the launch of its street concept in major metropolitan areas in 2008. The Kings Crossing location is the first street concept restaurant in Virginia. “Ever since opening our street locations in Maryland, we’ve received a tremendous response from customers in the metro DC area,” said Bruce Kim, Sarku Japan assistant vice president of Franchises, in a press release. “Due to store visibility and brand resonance, Northern Virginia was the logistical next step for the expansion of the street concept.” Sarku chefs …

Eat Local: The Bottom Dollar Dog Set to Open Mid-May

Restaurant will offer breakfast, hot dogs, and more.

This month, Keith Williams-Parker and best friend, Patrick Thompson, plan to launch The Bottom Dollar Dog at 723 Wilkes St. in Alexandria. The restaurant already has a pedigree: Keith's grandfather, Walter Williams, once ran a carryout—Williams Sandwich Shop—on the very same spot for nearly 60 years. Keith's new version takes its name from the surrounding neighborhood's former nickname, "The Bottom."  Walter's passing in February 2011 inspired Keith to restore the neighborhood institution, offering the same simple, no-frills food that made his grandfather's shop so popular.
