Mount Vernon Park Bridge Closed for Repairs

Funding has been secured, but a replacement won't be happening anytime soon.

The bridge near the Mount Vernon Park Association has been closed for quite some time, and it won't be reopening anytime soon.  The bridge connects the surrounding neighborhoods to the park, located off of Fairfax Road. Many residents have walked across the short bridge to get to the park, but the bridge has been closed off because it has been in a state of disrepair. Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland was able to secure funding to replace the bridge, but it’ll take between three to six months to get the permit and plans approved, Brett Kenney, chief aide to Supervisor Hyland, said Monday. “It’s unsafe right now,” Kenney said. “The beams underneath it holding it up – one of them is falling out and the other ones don’t look like …

I have never been to this park, or this bridge, but it seems to me that it is ridiculous that it will take 3 to 6 months to get a simple permit to build a small foot bridge that crosses, probably, a creek. REALLY? What the heck is going on with our Government? Is that the best Mr. Hyland can do? I know about 10 people who will build a bridge that would be beyond the minimum standards of the …   more ›
