The celebration will tie in with Memorial Day.
Waynewood Elementary School will have its annual Patriots' Day Celebration at 9:30 a.m. May 24 in the school's gym. The celebration will tie in with Memorial Day which is the following Monday, according to a recent news release from Lorrie Murphy, the school's news liaison. The purpose of the celebration is to recognize military and community patriots who defend, serve and protect the country. The school will recognize community leaders, military personnel, police officers, firemen and law enforcement officers from the Sheriff’s Office who will be present for the event. The 23rd annual National Memorial Day Concert, set for Sunday from 8-9:30 p.m. on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, has another stellar lineup this year, including performances by rock band Daughtry, Grammy Award-winner Natalie Cole, country singer Trace Adkins, American Idol finalist Jessica Sanchez and the National Symphony Orchestra. The show will be co-hosted by actors Gary Sinise and Joe Montegna, who are teaming up for the seventh year hosting the event, which remembers the sacrifices of veterans, service members and their families. AAA projects more than 34 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles away from home this weekend.
As families gear up for the official welcome of summer, AAA is projecting more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home Memorial Day Weekend. The travel club says the number of travelers increased by more than 500,000 from last year. More people will be on the roads instead of the air this year, according to AAA. More than 30.7 million people plan to drive to their destination, up 1.2 percent from the 30.3 million who drove last year. According to The Washington Post, retail gas prices dropped by a penny to a national average of $3.71 per gallon on Friday after a spike in April, and the weaker demand is also helping to push down prices. On Monday, 1,700-mile relay to Dallas passed through Belle Haven, Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon.
Joe Wolfel, a former Navy SEAL from Arlington, walked ten miles from Alexandria to Mount Vernon to honor the memory of the fallen. “I got out and one of my buddies died,” recalled Wolfel. “I wanted to bring awareness to the true meaning of Memorial Day. It’s not just a day off from work.” Wolfel joined participants in the Carry the Load relay as it passed through the Mount Vernon area on Monday. The 1700-mile relay started in West Point, N.Y. and is raising awareness about the true meaning of Memorial Day, one town at a time.
