The weekend weather forecast: Cooler temperatures across Northern Virginia.
Summer seemed to kick into gear this week across Northern Virginia, with temperatures in the 80s under sunny skies. But the Memorial Day weekend weather forecast in the Alexandria area calls for cooler temperatures. Friday’s forecast has high temperatures in the low or mid-60s with a 30 percent chance of showers, particularly in the afternoon. Saturday and Sunday temperatures will be in the low 70s under sunnier skies—the chance of rain decreases to just 10 percent. Monday should be downright beautiful—sunny with a high temperature of about 75 degrees across the DC metro area. Commuters in NoVa are paying $3.57 per gallon right now—lower than last year, but higher than earlier this spring.
Heading out of town for Memorial Day this weekend? You'll be paying less at the pump than you did last year even though the Northern Virginia area has seen prices spike in recent weeks. Average gas prices for the Northern Virginia region this week are at $3.57 for a gallon of regular unleaded gas, down from $3.69 a gallon a year ago, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. Paying $3.57 a gallon at the pump is better than what many Minnesotans are paying right now—an average of $4.27 a gallon, the highest prices in the country, according to the Star Tribune. Northern Virginia is faring better on gas prices than many other parts of the country, according to AAA. Currently, Virginia’s retail average is 26 cents cheaper than the national average. …

The celebration will tie in with Memorial Day.
Waynewood Elementary School will have its annual Patriots' Day Celebration at 9:30 a.m. May 24 in the school's gym. The celebration will tie in with Memorial Day which is the following Monday, according to a recent news release from Lorrie Murphy, the school's news liaison. The purpose of the celebration is to recognize military and community patriots who defend, serve and protect the country. The school will recognize community leaders, military personnel, police officers, firemen and law enforcement officers from the Sheriff’s Office who will be present for the event. The 23rd annual National Memorial Day Concert, set for Sunday from 8-9:30 p.m. on the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol, has another stellar lineup this year, including performances by rock band Daughtry, Grammy Award-winner Natalie Cole, country singer Trace Adkins, American Idol finalist Jessica Sanchez and the National Symphony Orchestra. AAA projects more than 34 million Americans will travel more than 50 miles away from home this weekend.
As families gear up for the official welcome of summer, AAA is projecting more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home Memorial Day Weekend. The travel club says the number of travelers increased by more than 500,000 from last year. More people will be on the roads instead of the air this year, according to AAA. More than 30.7 million people plan to drive to their destination, up 1.2 percent from the 30.3 million who drove last year. According to The Washington Post, retail gas prices dropped by a penny to a national average of $3.71 per gallon on Friday after a spike in April, and the weaker demand is also helping to push down prices. On Monday, 1,700-mile relay to Dallas passed through Belle Haven, Fort Hunt and Mount Vernon.
Joe Wolfel, a former Navy SEAL from Arlington, walked ten miles from Alexandria to Mount Vernon to honor the memory of the fallen. “I got out and one of my buddies died,” recalled Wolfel. “I wanted to bring awareness to the true meaning of Memorial Day. It’s not just a day off from work.” Wolfel joined participants in the Carry the Load relay as it passed through the Mount Vernon area on Monday. The 1700-mile relay started in West Point, N.Y. and is raising awareness about the true meaning of Memorial Day, one town at a time. Founder Clint Bruce, a veteran and former SEAL, founded Carry the Load last year to carry on the legacy of fallen soldiers and to honor active duty military and first responders.
