West Potomac lost to West Springfield Friday night, 34-10.
Turnovers and penalties plagued West Potomac's performance Friday night, costing them the game against West Springfield. The Spartans beat the Wolverines, 34-10. Within the first minute of the game, Spartans running back Jonathan Dunn set the pace with the first touchdown of the game. Kicker Tyler Czajkowski added a point with a successful field goal and the Spartans quickly took the lead, 7-0. Before the end of the first quarter, the Spartans scored twice more making the score 20-0 in favor of the Spartans. Darien Pickett, middle linebacker and left guard for varsity football and flanker for the Fort Hunt Warriors, will try out for the U.S. High School All-American Rugby Team in December.
When West Potomac’s Darien Pickett received the invitation to try out for the U.S. High School All-American Rugby Team, he didn’t realize how huge of an opportunity he was receiving. “At first I didn’t know what it meant and didn’t have anything to say. When I looked into it, I just felt honored that I was chosen by the selectors after they watched the past games from early June,” said Pickett. The first time Pickett ever played rugby was three years ago. Freshman football head Coach Dale Roach — who also coaches the U19 high school rugby team the Fort Hunt Warriors — noticed Pickett’s skills on the football field and suggested he try playing rugby as well. “He said I should try out for rugby because it would be a lot of fun and it’s …

The Wolverines lose to the Bulldogs, 0-49.
Friday night, the West Potomac Wolverines went head-to-head with the Westfield Bulldogs at West Potomac High School and failed to score one touchdown. The Wolverines had a hard time keeping possession of the ball while the Bulldogs practically lived in the endzone. By the end of the night, the final score was 49-0 in favor of Westfield. Demornay Pierson-El was a big contributor to Friday night's game as he has been an essential asset to the Wolverines throughout the season. The wide receiver was a predominant carrier in Friday's game along with quarterback Caleb Williams, who often moved out of the pocket to push the play down the field. Despite their efforts, the Wolverines didn’t make it to the endzone at all on Friday night with …

The Wolverines will take on the Bulldogs Oct. 12 at West Potomac High School.
The West Potomac Wolverines will go head-to-head with the Westfield Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. Friday at West Potomac High School at 6500 Quander Rd. in Alexandria. Wolverines Head Coach Jeremiah Davis said the Bulldogs are a well disciplined team that can pass and run effectively. "They do not make mistakes and their core group of players are solid," Davis said. "Our coaching staff like to refer to them as 'the machine' because they are so consitant at putting out a great product that it is hard to put together four solid quarters against them." However, Davis said every team can be beat, and the Wolverines hope they will be the team to do that this Friday. In preparation for Friday night's game, the Wolverines have had strong practices …

Demornay Pierson-El has been playing football since he was four -- now he's one of the most watched players in the game.
The first time Demornay Pierson-El played football, he was about four or five years old. Since then, the West Potomac High School junior has lived and breathed the sport, becoming the player to watch in Fairfax County this high school football season. Oddly, Pierson-El said he didn’t really know what football was, but watched it on television and always wanted to play. Eventually, his mother signed him up for a local youth league in his neighborhood and he has played the sport ever since. “I didn’t know what it was, but I know I wanted to play, so I went out there and played,” Pierson-El said. Halfway through this year's season, Pierson-El already has more than 13 touchdowns and more than 670 rushing yards. In one game alone, Pierson-El …

Coach Jeremiah Davis is starting his first year as football coach at West Potomac High School.
New West Potomac High School football coach Jeremiah Davis is predicting a smooth transition and competitive upcoming season as he embarks on his first year as the school’s football coach. “It’s a transition time for us because we’re switching offenses,” Davis told Patch. “So the better the guys the guys catch on the schemes, which they have been, the better it will go for us, offensively and defensively.” Davis took over the team this year after former coach Eric Henderson parted ways with the school this spring. An Annandale High School alumnus, Davis played defensive end for head coach Joe Paterno at Penn State from 2000 to 2004 and served as Annandale’s defensive coordinator the past seven seasons. Last season, the Wolverines racked up…
Coach Wells and Coach Davis weigh in on Thursday night's football game.
The Majors and the Wolverines will go head-to-head at Thursday night's season opener at Mount Vernon High School. Mount Vernon football coach Barry Wells said his team has been working hard for this season opener and says the Wolverines are “very talented” players. Mount Vernon has quite a few players who will stand out at Thursday’s game. Seniors Robert Becardi-Nelson (wide receiver), Jalen Bushnell (outside linebacker), Joshua Beekoe (safety), and Tasi Mathias (defensive end) are expected to lead the way, according to Wells. Junior running back Carlton Griffith is “a special individual,” Wells said. “[Griffith] runs the ball with talent,” he said. Wells expects the season opener to be a very competitive game. “There will be four complete…

Former Annandale and Penn State player talks with Patch about his new endeavor.
For the first time in eight years, a new head football coach will pace West Potomac’s sidelines this fall. Jeremiah Davis takes over for Eric Henderson, who parted ways with the school this spring. Davis, an Annandale High School alum, played defensive end for head coach Joe Paterno at Penn State from 2000 to 2004 and has served as Annandale’s defensive coordinator the past seven seasons. Patch sat down with the 29-year-old head coach, husband and father of three to talk about the upcoming season. What are some of the things that you have done in your short time at West Potomac to establish your coaching staff and to instill your new philosophy with your players? Former Penn State defensive lineman Jeremiah Davis to take over program rocked by controversy.
Jeremiah Davis, a former defensive lineman and 2004 graduate at Penn State, has been named the new football coach for the West Potomac Wolverines. Davis, 29, comes to the job from his high school alma mater, Annandale High School, where he has worked as co-defensive coordinator and defensive line coach since 2005, according to the Washington Post. Davis will coach at a school where controversy swirled this spring when FCPS decided not to renew the coaching contract of Eric Henderson, a history teacher who steered the football program with much success. Henderson responded to an e-mail controversy, but no reason was officially given for letting him go from the coaching position. Come fall, the team will be without two players—quarterback …
