Moran, Allen Sweep Huntington, Belle Haven

Patch has broken down vote tallies by local precincts.

Incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Moran sweeped the Huntington and Belle Haven communities by large margins in Tuesday’s primaries. Moran faced political newcomer Bruce Shuttleworth in the Democratic primary election for Virginia’s 8th District, which includes Arlington County, the city of Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County. He consistently earned more than 70 percent of the votes in all local precincts. Moran’s best showing was in the Bucknell precinct, where he won 84 percent of the vote, compared to 5 percent for Shuttleworth. The highest percentage of voters choosing Shuttleworth was in the Grovesnor precinct, where he received 28 percent of the vote. District-wide, Moran won handily with 74 percent of the vote. Incumbent U.S. Rep. Jim Moran sweept the Fort Hunt and Hybla Valley communities by large margins in Tuesday’s primaries. Moran faced political newcomer Bruce Shuttleworth in the Democratic primary election for Virginia’s 8th District, which includes Arlington County, the city of Alexandria and parts of Fairfax County. With congressional primary elections scheduled next week, Patch is profiling each of the four Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate, who will face each other on the ballot June 12. On the face of it, most political observers might count out E.W. Jackson in Virginia's Senate GOP primary on Tuesday. But Jackson, who was raised in foster homes until he was 9, eventually joined the Marines and graduated from Harvard Law School, never gives up. "I think I'm going to win. George Allen One of Four Candidates in Next Week’s Senate GOP Primary

Former senator, governor hopes to recapture his old Senate seat.

With congressional primary elections scheduled next week, Patch is profiling each of the four Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate, who will face each other on the ballot June 12. Former Senator and Gov. George Allen hopes to recapture the Senate seat he lost in 2006 to Democrat Jim Webb, who won the seat by less than 10,000 votes. Allen announced in January last year that he planned to run again. The next month, Webb announced his retirement from the Senate. Allen is up against three fellow Republicans vying for the seat: Jamie Radtke, Bob Marshall and E.W. Jackson. With congressional primary elections scheduled next week, Patch is profiling each of the four Republican candidates running for the U.S. Senate, who will face each other on the ballot June 12. Tea party member Jamie Radtke of Chesterfield County announced in December 2010 she was running for the Republican nomination for the Senate seat currently occupied by Sen. Jim Webb, who is retiring from the U.S. Senate. Before running for the U.S. Senate, Radtke was best known for co-founding and chairing the Virginia Federation of Tea Party Patriots. She organized a tea party convention that attracted nearly 3,000 participants to Richmond. Voter Guide to June 12 Primaries

Republican primary election set for U.S. Senate candidates and 11th Congressional District; Democratic primary election scheduled for 8th Congressional District Democratic candidates.

In less than a month, Virginia voters will head to the polls for the Democratic and Republican primaries on Tuesday, June 12. Across Northern Virginia, voters will decide among candidates for the U.S. Senate as well as for the 8th and 11th Congressional districts. If your polling place is holding both a Republican primary and a Democratic primary, you can only vote in one primary.  If you aren't registered to vote, you have until Monday, May 21 at 5 p.m. to register. Little known fact: If you are 17 years old now but you are turning 18 by the Nov. 6 general election, you can vote in the June 12 primary. Parents May Opt Out of 'Mandatory' HPV Vaccine in Virginia

Issue turns into political hot potato.

Although Republican Senate candidate Jamie Radtke is rallying against a "mandatory" human papillomavirus or HPV vaccine for girls in Virginia, parents in the state may opt out of the vaccine. Under "school requirements" the Virginia health department Web site states: "After reviewing educational materials approved by the Board of Health, the parent or guardian, at the parent’s or guardian’s sole discretion, may elect for the child not to receive the HPV vaccine." Then-Gov. Tim Kaine (D) amended the original mandatory 2007 bill to permit parental or guardian-sanctioned opt-out. Kaine is currently a candidate for the U.S. Senate. In a wide-ranging interview with Patch on Friday, U.S. senatorial candidate and tea party member Jamie Radtke discussed her views on everything from energy issues and healthcare to gay marriage and abortion.
