County officials have said the project is still in planning stages.
Planning is underway for flood relief in the Huntington neighborhood after Fairfax County residents voted “yes” to a $30 million bond on Election Day. But officials don’t have a timeline for the project just yet. The storm-water bond will provide a source of funding for a levee and other measures that officials hope will mitigate flooding in the area. There are 180 Huntington homes at risk of flooding in the FEMA-designated flood plain, and $30 million will fund a 2,865-foot-long levee and pump station along Cameron Run – something residents agree the area is in dire need of. Residents were able to breathe a sigh of relief after Hurricane Sandy – although some residents were forced to evacuate, no flooding occurred. But homes Huntington …

On Sunday, the Fort Hunt community rallied around a family with close ties to one of the areas most affected by Hurricane Sandy. Alice Sofield and her husband Rick are native Long Islanders. Rick grew up in Long Beach, one of the South Shore communities hit hardest by Hurricane Sandy. Rick’s parents, grandparents, and siblings still reside there, and his parents lost their home during the storm. All of his family members are safe. The weekend after the storm, Rick picked up his five nieces and nephews from Long Beach, brought them back to Fort Hunt, and enrolled them in Fairfax County Public Schools. “Neighbors brought over big bags of candy because the kids missed Halloween, and it just turned into a bigger thing,” Alice said. Alice’s …

This past weekend, AOL and Patch employees took an opportunity to pitch in, packing two tractor trailers worth of food, water and supplies in Dulles and Baltimore. The donations are headed to Hurricane Sandy ravaged areas in New Jersey and Long Island. Want to join the relief efforts? Click here to donate: https://donate.networkforgood.org/aol "When a catastrophe of this size hits, we all feel it, both the hundreds of us who live in the impacted towns, and our colleagues who are watching and wishing they could help …

Fewer than 2,000 Dominion customers in Northern Virginia remained without power Thursday morning.
Dominion Virginia Power this morning released a list of where crews will be working to restore power Thursday. The list is attached to this article as a pdf (available in the media box to the right). "Lists are based on early morning work plans for crews. However, needs often change during a major restoration and crews stay on the move. They may visit, leave and return to some locations, and may perform work at locations not shown on today's list," according to Dominion. The highest concentration of current outages are inside the Beltway, however many smaller outages exist across Fairfax, Loudoun and Prince William Counties and elsewhere. Dominion reported only about 1,700 customers without power in Northern Virginia as of Wednesday night…

Sandy's wrath rendered solemnity but also elicited — perhaps, as a means to cope with the anxiety and stress of such an unprecedented storm — gallows humor.
Certainly, Hurricane Sandy was no laughing matter. Making landfall in New Jersey Monday night, she wreaked havoc up and down the East Coast, leaving behind 55 dead, 8.2 million without power and untold billions of dollars in damage. Her wrath rendered solemnity but also elicited — perhaps, as a means to cope with the anxiety and stress of such an unprecedented storm — gallows humor. Before, during and after the hurricane, social media buzzed relentlessly and unapologetically with witty (and sometimes, depraved) commentary. Here are some amusing tweets — from both famous people and every day Joe’s — I spotted while perusing Twitter: Tracy Carracedo @StandUpTracy To my neighbors who thumbed their noses at me after impressively raking …
