Huntington Residents Concerned About Police Helicopters

Fairfax County Police Department usually has helicopter units in area in response to calls.

Recently, Huntington community residents have expressed concerns about how frequently they hear police helicopters flying around the area at night. Some residents say they hear the helicopters later in the evenings. Residents who are members of the Huntington Community group on Facebook have posted concerns, often asking about the reason why helicopters and police cars are in the area. In some instances, incidents on Huntington Avenue and surrounding streets have been reported at the time residents have noticed the helicopters. UPDATE: Customers, Clerk Robbed at 7-Eleven on Huntington Avenue

Three masked robbers held up the store and also robbed customers in a late-night robbery at the 7-Eleven on Huntington Avenue.

UPDATE (Wednesday): Police responded to a report of an armed robbery at the 7-Eleven at 2305 Huntington Ave at 1:38 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 9, according to Public Information Officer Lucy Caldwell. Three masked men entered the store, showed their guns and announced the robbery. Customers were in the store at the time of the incident, and suspects took belongings from them as well as cash from the store and fled. No one was injured during the robbery. Suspects were described as black males, wearing masks and gloves. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Fairfax County Police Department. Huntington Community Association Concerned About Activity in Huntington Park

Constant traffic, possible illegal activity in park, issues with parking and zoning restrictions, chief problems residents say.

Concern about possible drug activity has sparked the Huntington Community Association to organize a neighborhood walk and clean-up, its members decided Thursday night at the Huntington Community Center. The group plans to meet Saturday, Oct. 13 at 9 a.m. at the baseball diamond in Huntington Park. Some members are concerned about the activity that goes on throughout the day and night at Huntington Park, they said at their meeting. During the planned walk, the members will observe any activity while also trying to come up with a proposal to submit to the Mount Vernon Council of Citizens' Associations. Eight-Story Mixed-Use Development Coming to Huntington

The development will be located at Huntington Avenue and Biscayne Drive.

The Fairfax County Redevelopment and Housing Authority has approved a change to the Huntington Conservation Plan to permit a 173-unit mixed-use redevelopment project at the corner of Huntington Avenue and Biscayne Drive. The decision will allow the project, which has been under discussion for more than a year, to proceed. The developer, A&R Development, is currently pursuing regulatory approvals, according to the Southeast Fairfax Development Corp. A&R is actively working on a rezoning application to Fairfax County. Unlike the majority of communities in Virginia, Huntington has a conservation plan that requires development to conform to certain stipulations, but amendments can be voted in. Huntington Group Launches Fund to Promote Flooding Fix Bond

Local residents are urged to chip in or volunteer time.

The Huntington Community Association has created a fund for purposes of promoting the passage of the $30 million bond referendum for flood prevention measures in Huntington on ballots this November. Alan Ruof, who is coordinating the campaign in favor of the bond’s passage, said the fund only amounts to several hundred dollars at the moment. The funds will be used to promote the bond’s passage through media such as fliers or other materials, such as signs. In May, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors voted 6-3 to approve the bond referendum, a month after Huntington residents formally urged the board for flood protection improvements after last September’s severe flooding forced 200 people to evacuate the area.
