Hollin Hall Pastry Shop in Fort Hunt has already sold hundreds of pies and cakes for the holiday.
Have you ever carved a cake that looks like a turkey? The Hollin Hall Pastry Shop on Fort Hunt Road sure has, and was in the process of cutting one up when Patch caught up with them Tuesday afternoon. The shop, which is closed on Thanksgiving day, has reached its limit for special orders, but they'll still have plenty on Wednesday. They are baking round-the-clock: fruit tarts, cakes, and hundreds of pumpkin, pecan and apple pies. You can still find what you want at the pastry shop on Wednesday, but you'd better get there fast. They're open from 7 a.m.-6 p.m. "There's going to be a line going out the door all day long," said manager Nadia Patnode. "We'll probably sell out by 5 p.m." It costs $18-$22 for a 12-inch pie. U.S. Senate candidate visited local business owners Wednesday in Fort Hunt.
Former Virginia governor and Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Tim Kaine visited small business owners in Fort Hunt Wednesday morning as part of his campaign. Kaine made stops at the Mount Vernon Farmers Market, Hollin Hall Automotive, Hollin Hall Pastry Shop, and the Variety Store, speaking with local business owners and constituents. "At the gas station I learned what it's like to run a small business for 51 years," Kaine said of Hollin Hall Automotive. "It's a different kind of business than the one I opened with my dad. There are a lot of similarities in the number of employees and the hard work of Ruth, the owner, and her son Tom." Kaine has hosted many events in Fort Hunt and said it was "good to reconnect" with local residents. "I've…

Shop is accepting donations to help bakery stay open following last week’s storm. Calling on loyal patrons to come in and spend, donate.
Hollin Hall Pastry Shop is accepting donations to help the store get back on its feet following a four-day power outage that spoiled all its supplies and left the shop closed for six days. The shop reopened Friday with a supply of breakfast pastries and plans to have sweets filling the showcases by Saturday. However, the store’s insurance policy didn’t cover the losses incurred during the power outage, which totaled about $35,000, said General Manager Tammy Swann. All supplies in refrigerators or freezers were a total loss, Swann said. The shop also runs a wholesale business, supplying local restaurants and hotels with desserts, which will take even longer to restart, she said. As a small business with little cash on hand, the shop’s …
