Historic Huntley Victim of Vandalism, Theft

Multiple historical items were stolen from the house during a break-in reported Aug. 3.

One or more burglars smashed windows and glass display cases and stole multiple historic items from Historic Huntley during a break-in reported Aug. 3. According to Fairfax County police, an employee was checking on the house, located at 6918 Harrison Lane near the main entrance to Huntley Meadows Park, and discovered the damage. Police believe forced entry was made through a rear door. Fairfax County Park Authority spokeswoman Judy Pedersen said the burglar or burglars stole items including antique glass marbles, an old ceramic doorknob with a swirled round glaze and an early-20th-century dish with green decorations. People who have such little regard for history probably have no idea of the true value of the items they stole. It wouldn't surprise me that those items may have been subsequently tossed into the woods or trash after the thrill of the break-in. We are so glad to see the property restored but the nearby neighborhood will make it a continuing target for vandalism. I do hope security is beefed up as…   more ›

PHOTOS: Historic Huntley Restored to Former Glory

Site wil open to public May 19.

Historic Huntley has at last been reconnected with its long-lost sibling down the road. A Federal period villa built in 1825 for Thomson Francis Mason, a grandson of George Mason, Historic Huntley overlooks over the broad valley farmed by generations of Masons and was once part of Hunting Creek Farm, now the site of Huntley Meadows Park. The park has completed its restoration of Historic Huntley, which will open to the public beginning May 19. “It’s very exciting, and I think it sort of completes the Huntley Park picture,” said Kevin Munroe, Huntley Meadows Park manager, during a media tour Thursday. “Down there, in that park, the people living here in the 1800s, that was their land. So now that this is open, it completes it and connects …

I have been coming to the Open Houses at Historic Huntley for many years, and have been a Friend of Historic Huntley for several years as well. I have been wondering when the house would ever be restored. How exciting to see that day finally realized! The old house looks wonderful! I certainly will attend the Grand Opening on May 19th, wouldn't miss it! I hope the public realizes what a gem they …   more ›
