West Potomac Athlete to Play on US All American Rugby Team

Darien Pickett will travel to England to play on the US HSAA rugby team.

West Potomac junior Darien Pickett was invited to play on the US High School All-American (HSAA) Rugby Team this week. Pickett, who plays flanker for the Fort Hunt Warriors U19 rugby team, tried out for a spot on the U-17 side in December at Arizona State University. Fort Hunt Warriors coach Dale Roach attended the tryouts in Arizona as an observing coach.   “The competition was fierce,” Roach said. “He competed against 120 other kids from all over the country, all the best players tried out to get on a team with 25 spots.” Pickett and Roach received word that Pickett made the team on Monday evening, the day before the Warriors began practicing for their spring season.   “It was very cool that we got news of making the team the night …

Wolverines Lose to Titans in Overtime, 13-10

West Potomac lost their last game of the regular season to T.C. Williams.

When the Titans entered the stadium Friday night, they brought along a sledge hammer, metaphorically promising the Wolverines a smackdown. Although they struggled to get on the scoreboard throughout the game, the Titans kept their promise and took home a win in overtime, 13-10. In the first quarter, both teams played very tough defense resulting in no touchdowns from either side. With less than five minutes in the first half, West Potomac's quarterback, Caleb Williams, made a 50-yard touchdown. Kicker Chris Blewitt added the field goal, making the score 7-0 in West Potomac's favor. The Titans finally got on the scoreboard at the last minute with a touchdown made by running back Dealo Robertson. T.C. Williams added the field goal to tie the…

Coaches' Corner: West Potomac v. Woodson

The West Potomac Wolverines will play their homecoming game against the Woodson Cavaliers.

This week, the West Potomac Wolverines will play against the Woodson Cavaliers at West Potomac High School at 7:30 p.m. at 6500 Quander Road for the Wolverines’ homecoming. The Wolverines were unable to score at all against Westfield last week, with a final score of 0-49. Westfield was successful in playing fundamental football and shutting down one of West Potomac’s key players: Demornay Pierson-El. Wolverines Head Coach Jeremiah Davis said the team plans to eliminate mistakes to win this week's homecoming game. "Our keys to victory this week will be eliminating those mistakes and protecting the football," said Davis. "Woodson has a strong rushing attack and an experienced quarterback who manages the game well. They are riding a two game …

West Potomac Athlete to Try Out for National Rugby Team

Darien Pickett, middle linebacker and left guard for varsity football and flanker for the Fort Hunt Warriors, will try out for the U.S. High School All-American Rugby Team in December.

When West Potomac’s Darien Pickett received the invitation to try out for the U.S. High School All-American Rugby Team, he didn’t realize how huge of an opportunity he was receiving. “At first I didn’t know what it meant and didn’t have anything to say. When I looked into it, I just felt honored that I was chosen by the selectors after they watched the past games from early June,” said Pickett. The first time Pickett ever played rugby was three years ago. Freshman football head Coach Dale Roach — who also coaches the U19 high school rugby team the Fort Hunt Warriors — noticed Pickett’s skills on the football field and suggested he try playing rugby as well. “He said I should try out for rugby because it would be a lot of fun and it’s …

Turf Funding Partially Secured for High School Fields

Supervisor Gerry Hyland, School Board members and Park Authority members met to update parents and students about getting funding for turf fields and transportation for after school programs.

A development along Richmond Highway will be providing some funds toward an artificial turf field for a local high school, according to community updates Monday evening from Fairfax County Supervisor Gerry Hyland and others. However, it may be some time before students are able to use it. Mount Vernon District Supervisor Gerry Hyland met with parents, students and VOICE leaders Monday at West Potomac High School to provide an update on improving local recreational facilities. At the meeting, Hyland and Park Authority Board Member Linwood Gorham also provided brief updates on transportation for after school programs. “We have a number of developments that are occurring, and redevelopments along Richmond Highway particularly," said Hyland. West Potomac Fails to Get on Scoreboard Against Westfield

The Wolverines lose to the Bulldogs, 0-49.

Friday night, the West Potomac Wolverines went head-to-head with the Westfield Bulldogs at West Potomac High School and failed to score one touchdown. The Wolverines had a hard time keeping possession of the ball while the Bulldogs practically lived in the endzone. By the end of the night, the final score was 49-0 in favor of Westfield. Demornay Pierson-El was a big contributor to Friday night's game as he has been an essential asset to the Wolverines throughout the season. The wide receiver was a predominant carrier in Friday's game along with quarterback Caleb Williams, who often moved out of the pocket to push the play down the field. Despite their efforts, the Wolverines didn’t make it to the endzone at all on Friday night with …

Coaches' Corner: West Potomac Versus Annandale

This week, the Wolverines will take on the Atoms.

The West Potomac Wolverines are scheduled to go head-to-head with the Annandale Atoms Friday, Sept. 28. at 7:30 p.m. at Annandale High School, located at 4700 Medford Drive. West Potomac head coach Jeremiah Davis referred to Annandale as a "tough, scrappy team." Davis said Annandale has a great quarterback combination in Nolan Gilbert and Steve Schwartz. "This year, their offense has been more productive and able to capitalize on opponents' mistakes which makes them more of a challenge," Davis said in a recent email. "Defensively safety Jack Johnson has been a thorn in West Potomac’s side for four years and upfront Brian Jefferson will have to be accounted for." In preparation for this week's game, Davis said the Wolverines changed it up a…
