Photo Gallery: West Potomac High School Graduation

West Potomac High School honored the graduates of the class of 2012 Friday afternoon in a ceremony held at George Mason University's Patriot Center.

More than 450 West Potomac High School graduates filled the seats on the floor of GMU's Patriot Center on Friday afternoon in Fairfax. The class of 2012 celebrated their accomplishments with a ceremony in the company of proud family and friends. The afternoon's high points included graduate speaker Clara Wear, who gave a witty and inspiring speech touting the advantages to being average—of which she claims to be. The day's celebration honored almost 80 honor graduates and also recognized and gave thanks to students who were committed to military service.

WPHS Class of 2012 Q&A: Hind Tatby

West Potomac class president enjoys the outdoors.

West Potomac High School class president Hind Tatby, 18, will attend Valencia College this fall. She has a 3.51 GPA and participated in FBLA, student government, Workers CO-OP, and Bucknell-West Potomac mentoring. Tatby also hosts a weekly radio show called Upickradio. She delivered a speech to her classmates at West Potomac’s graduation on Friday. What made you choose Valencia College? I had a difficult time trying to figure out where I wanted to go, and after denying scholarships to St. Johns University, Rutgers, and Johnson and Wales, I decided to go with something I’d be comfortable with and that was to go to Florida. New Orleans-bound honor grad plays in a local bluegrass band.

Django Szilagi, 17, is a West Potomac High School honor grad. Szilagi was born in New Orleans and will return to his birthplace to attend Loyola University New Orleans, where he will major in political science. Patch caught up with Szilagi to discuss his graduation speech and his music career. Tell us about your graduation speech. My speech is not cliché. It’s about the problems facing our generation. We have solutions to fix those problems. How long did it take to write? It took me a couple days. I started with a Dr. Seuss quote but realized everyone did that. What are some of your favorite memories of high school? I played in a bluegrass band, marching band, and swim and dive team. I just won prom king. It was a very good experience. …

West Potomac honor grad Danielle McHugh, 18, enjoys learning about people. She will be putting those skills to use as a journalism major at Tennessee Tech. McHugh will be attending on a softball scholarship. Patch caught up with McHugh before graduation to discuss her speech and aspirations. What was your inspiration behind your graduation speech? I figured everyone was going to talk about the past few years and their future, but I’m going to talk about moments and how we should take every one and grasp them.
