'Tis the season to give. These Mount Vernon area nonprofits are in need of donations this holiday season so they can continue to help at-risk and low-income families in our area. Help brighten a family's holiday and take a look at the list of needs below. New Hope Housing needs help with the following: Christmas food baskets; grocery gift cards (Safeway, Shoppers, Giant); adopt a family for Christmas (wish lists are available); adopt a single adult. Three families in need living in an Alexandria apartment complex were treated to an "Extreme Home Makeover" on Wednesday. Each year, each chapter of the International Association of Home Staging Professionals donates their time to help spruce up the homes of families in need or gives a facelift to facilities of organizations helping families in need. The Washington, D.C. Chapter of IAHS has selected three apartments that are part of the Beth El House program for transitioning famillies. These apartments are provided in conjunction with Mount Vernon nonprofit Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services. Last year's project recipient was The Campagna Center in Old Town Alexandria. United Community Ministries, New Hope Housing and Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services are looking at co-location, among other options.
Leaders from three social service agencies on the Route 1 corridor are exploring ways to better coordinate efforts and are considering centralizing operations in a single location. United Community Ministries, New Hope Housing and Good Shepherd Housing a and Family Services all work with the low-income and marginalized populations. UCM Acting Executive Director Elizabeth McNally said co-location of the agencies has been discussed. "It’s really just exploratory talks right now,” she said. The recession has negatively impacted funding for all three organizations. Good Shepherd Housing and Family Services hosted its Sailing Home gala at the Crowne Plaza Old Town Saturday night. The event raised more than $250,000 to help neighbors in need, said Karen Jupiter, director of development at Good Shepherd Housing. Attendees included Sen. Toddy Puller, Del. Scott Surovell, and 2012 Adinaro Award recipient Gloria Curry.

Cynthia Hull died March 16; dedicated life to serving others in Fairfax and Arlington counties.
During Cynthia Hull’s tenure as executive director of United Community Ministries, the number of clients the agency served nearly doubled, from 7,000 in 2007 to 13,000 five years later. Some former donors became clients. It took a woman like Hull to see UCM through a tough recession and stay on top. “She guided the agency through being able to expand in order to serve all those people with relatively flat funding, which is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Elizabeth McNally, UCM deputy executive director. Hull died March 16 at Mt. Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine, where she had been staying with her son. She had been diagnosed with cancer only Jan. 9. She was 62. But Colliflower, a former prostitute, and Jacobs, a former federal government employee, both landed in homeless shelters, and both knew they needed hope — and determination — to change their lives for the better.
