Use this gas price locator tool to find the lowest price right now.
by Virginia Patch Staff Gas prices nationwide were predicted to be lower this summer compared to the last three years, but that won't translate into savings at the pump this Memorial Day weekend, experts said. "Motorists this year are facing rising gas prices heading into the Memorial Day holiday," said Michael Green, a AAA spokesman, adding that Memorial Day 2013 would probably be the most expensive since 2011. In past years, prices have declined heading into early summer as oil refineries produced more gasoline to meet expected summer driving demand. This year, though, Midwest refineries haven't been able to produce as much gas, which has pushed prices up. "If you can gas up today to prepare for your Memorial Day driving, do so," said …

To help you plan your travel, the Virginia Department of Transportation created this set of maps showing Thanksgiving traffic congestion from Wednesday, Nov. 23 through Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011. Unlike last year, the Beltway Express Lanes will be open for Thanksgiving, which may alleviate some of the Thanksgiving travel congestion on Wednesday. The 2011 maps…

Gas prices increase over night after Isaac reaches the Gulf.
Since then-Hurricane Isaac hit land Tuesday afternoon, there has been an average 4-cent increase in gas prices across the nation, a bump felt at the pump in Northern Virginia as well, according to AAA. Since Wednesday evening, Isaac was bumped back to a tropical storm but is still expected to cause heavy rains and winds as it moves inland this week. “I think the change in gas prices is short-lived,” said John Townsend, spokesman for AAA Mid-Atlantic. “Once the weather changes, hopefully we’ll see prices similar to what they were before the storm.” In the Washingto metropolitan area, the average gas price for regular gasoline jumped from $3.93 to $3.99 since Tuesday night, according to AAA. Hurricane Isaac could increase gas prices in Virginia. If you're traveling Labor Day Weekend or driving to college, here's what AAA says about gas prices.
Hurricane Isaac, which may hit the Gulf Coast late Tuesday or early Wednesday and has already shut down several refineries, could send gas prices up right before Labor Day weekend. But for now, it looks like Americans are still making plans to travel. The average fuel price in Fairfax County on Sunday was $3.80 — more than 20 cents higher than just a month ago and slightly higher than Friday's national average of $3.75. AAA defines the Labor Day holiday weekend as starting on Thursday and ending Monday, Sept. 3. AAA projects that 33 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more from home during the upcoming Labor Day holiday weekend. “In the absence of strong economic growth that might fuel a significant boost in travel volume, it is an …

As families gear up for the official welcome of summer, AAA is projecting more than 34 million Americans will travel 50 miles or more away from home Memorial Day Weekend. The travel club says the number of travelers increased by more than 500,000 from last year. More people will be on the roads instead of the air this year, according to AAA. More than 30.7 million people plan to drive to their destination, up 1.2 percent from the 30.3 million who drove last year. According to The Washington Post, retail gas prices dropped by a penny to a national average of $3.71 per gallon on Friday after a spike in April, and the weaker demand is also helping to push down prices. "The overall domestic economic picture continues to improve slightly, …

Rising gas prices forced station to scale back, owner says.
This story is one in a continuing series on the changing American dream. Tom Harvey’s new service policy has some Fort Hunt seniors on edge. Harvey, owner of Hollin Hall Automotive, has ended the station’s trademark full service for all customers due to the rising cost of gas. The average cost of a gallon of gas in the area, as of Friday, has passed $4, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic. But the station’s uniformed attendants will still pump gas for the disabled and seniors who need assistance, Harvey said. “I think people have the perception that they’re going to pull in up front and nobody’s going to be out there, and they’re going to be, ‘Oh my God, I don’t even know how to use the pump,’ ” he said. “We’re always going to have someone out …

Here is a great idea for protecting your phone, tablet, laptop and even your camera, keys, luggage, pet and passport while traveling. Two years ago, I found MYSTUFFLOSTANDFOUND and obtained tracker tags for OKOBAN, a free global lost and found service. I placed tracker tags on all of my valuables. It paid off in Florence. I left my passport at a restaurant at lunch. That afternoon, I received a …   more ›
