PHOTOS: Mount Vernon Multiplex Demolition Begins

The demolition of the former Mount Vernon Multiplex Cinemas started Tuesday.

Construction crews started to demolish the former Mount Vernon Multiplex Cinemas building on Route 1 Tuesday morning.   Preliminary work on the site began in early April. The demolition of the former multiplex site will make way for the new Costco Wholesale expected to open in 2013. The completed building is expected to cover more than 143,000 square feet. And residents of Ladson Lane are now being funnelled onto Route 1, since their access to Walmart (and points north via the service road) are now closed. And for some reason when you try and make a left to get out of Ladson Lane, the lights on Route 1 are timed so you hit every. single. one. All the way up to Old Town.   more ›

Mulligan Road Construction Moves Forward

Construction on the Fort Belvoir connector road has resumed.

Phase II of the Mulligan Road construction project, which will connect Route 1 to Telegraph Road, is moving forward after experiencing a setback in November. The second bid protest filed by the Overland Corporation was dismissed in late December. Shirley Contracting has resumed work on the project, which is still on target to be completed by late fall 2013. “Construction seems to be moving along,” said Joan Clark, staff assistant to Lee District Supervisor Jeff McKay. “We’re playing catch-up from the time we missed from the lawsuit.” Phase II of Mulligan Road consists of widening portions of Richmond Highway and Telegraph Road and construction of the Mulligan Road Bridge over John J. Kingman Road and the Telegraph Road bridge over Piney …

I wonder if the new Wegmans will eventually see more shoppers than the new Costco? Costco looks like it could be a real bottleneck there, unless there are plans for more ways to get in and out than the one street?   more ›

Telegraph Road Interchange on Schedule for Late 2012

The Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project is projected to be complete by June 2013.

The Telegraph Road Interchange reconstruction phase of the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project is currently on schedule to be complete by late 2012. Construction is both on schedule and on budget, said Jenny Rios, a spokesperson for the project. “That’s one of the things we like to promote about the bridge project in general," Rios said. "Since its inception, we’ve been on budget.” According to a winter 2012 construction update, there are three major project stages left to complete on the Woodrow Wilson Bridge Project: reconstructing 2.5 miles of I-95/I-495 from the Eisenhower Connector to the Route 1 interchange, including THRU and LOCAL lanes; building ramps for an interchange at the Beltway Outer Loop, Telegraph Road, Huntington Avenue and …

The Heights of Groveton On Schedule

The 290 luxury unit complex will be completed by the fall of 2012

After breaking ground earlier this year, the new mixed-use Heights of Groveton is on track to be completed by the fall of 2012. Tim Mulcahy from Red Brick Development Group reports that everything is going to plan. "We started construction in spring of 2011 with site planning, footing and foundation work," Mulcahy said. "I'd call it infrastructure work—sewer line, electricity and work like that. The groundwork can take a while, but once we get going, it'll go up quickly." Work on the foundation for the 360,000 square foot structure is being completed first, but Mulcahy said debris and rubble from the locations former buildings had to be removed before any real work could begin.
