A Japanese restaurant opened its doors in the Kings Crossing Shopping Center Monday.
Sarku Japan has opened its first street concept restaurant Monday in Virginia in the Kings Crossing Shopping Center on Richmond Highway. The restaurant is traditionally located in mall food courts, but has expanded the brand with the launch of its street concept in major metropolitan areas in 2008. The Kings Crossing location is the first street concept restaurant in Virginia. “Ever since opening our street locations in Maryland, we’ve received a tremendous response from customers in the metro DC area,” said Bruce Kim, Sarku Japan assistant vice president of Franchises, in a press release. “Due to store visibility and brand resonance, Northern Virginia was the logistical next step for the expansion of the street concept.” Sarku chefs …

Re-Reads is a great local used bookstore.
Kvetch, kvetch, kvetch. For as long as I can remember, the Mount Vernon community has been kvetching (complaining, an act invented by New Yorkers) to those powers about the lack of a nice bookstore. When I was a staff person for Supervisor Gerry Hyland, that had to be one of the most frequently asked questions, just second to “Hey, Gerry, when the hell are we gonna get better cell phone service?” I can assure you that for years Hyland had been trying to persuade the Barnes and Nobles of the world to locate to the Route 1 corridor, but the response always was that the demographics would not support a full-time book store. Now, Beth and Tom Conway, who reside in Mason Hill, have responded to the community and have opened up not a new …

R-rated film opening this weekend is spectacular, spotty, yet satisfying.
In Greek mythology, Prometheus got in big trouble for handing over the secret of fire to mere mortals. In modern day, he represents the quest for human knowledge and achievement. Of course, he wound up tied to a rock and having an eagle peck his guts out every day. Apparently the team who embarks on their own quest for knowledge in the spacecraft that supplies the title of Ridley Scott's highly anticipated new film hadn't gotten the foreshadowing memo. For them, asking questions about human origin, and actively seeking answers, is the beginning of Bad Things happening, but then we audience members, who are privy to Ridley's dark horrific alien past, know that going in. Much has been made of keeping the plot under wraps. "Prometheus" is …

TitleMax is the second car title lending business to open in Mount Vernon in six months.
By this summer, another car title loan business will open its doors, this time at the former Il Paradiso Trattoria site on Route 1. TitleMax is expected to open in June, said Brendan Clark of Renaud Consulting, the leasing agent at Cooper Center. TitleMax signed the lease for the space June 2011 but did not submit drawings to the landlord until March. The company needs to go to Fairfax County for final approval of their plans. The new TitleMax location will be the second car title loan business to open on Route 1 since January 1. There are at least eight car title loan businesses in Fairfax County, three of which are located along the Route 1 corridor. The car title lending industry was unregulated until legislation went into effect in …

Husband and wife developed dual tote bag, play surface for toys.
Adam and Amy Fazackerley quickly learned that Legos and Oriental carpets make a bad combination. The Fazackerleys, Fort Hunt parents of three boys age 8 and younger, had begun to dread picking up after their children after they spread the tiny toys around the carpet. Amy searched for something that would organize the toys better than bins but came up short. “When I heard every morning — when they would start to get those bins out — I thought, ‘Oh please, not the Legos. Don’t get those out. Anything but those,’” Amy said. “And then I’m thinking, 'Why am I doing that? That’s the best toy for them.'” Adam added: “When you get to the point as a parent where you are almost groaning at your kids wanting to play with something that’s mind …

Newly opened used bookstore offers fiction and non-fiction titles.
When she was a mechanical engineering student at Georgia Tech, Beth Conway had a special weekend routine that inspired her to open her own used bookstore. When most college students would attend parties on Friday nights,Conway and her friends would enjoy dinner at a Mexican restaurant and then visit a used bookstore next door. “We used to spend Friday nights going out to eat and going to the bookstore,” she recalled. It’s only fitting that ReReads is located next door to El Paso Mexican Restaurant in Mount Vernon. Conway opened ReReads on Feb. 7 and says business has been steady since opening. Conway resides in Fort Hunt with her husband and three teenagers. She worked as an engineer at Fort Belvoir until her youngest was born. She held a …
