Bryant Early Learning Center Director Focuses on Excellence

Torria Baker cultivates relationships with kids and families.

During her first two months as the new director of UCM's Bryant Early Learning (BEL) Center, Torria Baker is focusing on improving the center and engaging with staff, families, and kids. Baker began her tenure as director in February. She joined the Bryant Early Learning Center in May 2012 as assistant director and has been serving as acting director since October. Baker previously worked at the childcare center at INOVA Mount Vernon Hospital, but decided to take the position at the BEL Center to serve as an advocate for kids in need. “It didn’t offer much of a challenge,” Baker said. “I had a pull to do more for the community. UCM Names New Director of Bryant Early Learning Center

Torria Baker has been named the Center's new director.

Torria Baker has been selected as the new director of UCM's Bryant Early Learning Center. Baker began her new role Feb. 6. She joined the Bryant Early Learning Center in May 2012 as assistant director and has been serving as acting director since October. Established in 1986, the Bryant Early Learning Center has provided safe, affordable, developmentally appropriate, full-day early childhood education that meets the learning, social, and emotional development needs of children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. “I am honored and excited to work with our staff and parents to lead the Bryant Early Learning Center,” Baker said in a statement. “The children and families at the Center are what make the strong bond between home and school. Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club Distributes Books to Local Children

Local service organization distributed 34 books to children at the Bryant Early Learning Center.

The Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club visited UCM’s Bryant Early Learning Center earlier this month to distribute 34 brand new books for children.  Each child in the pre-kindergarten and pre-school classes received a new book with their name written in it.  Mount Vernon Kiwanis Club members Joanne Malkin, Betty Puschek and Greg Engelking helped each child pick out a book and wrote, or helped the child in some cases, write their name in the book.  “They get so excited that they get to pick out a book. Even the little ones love having their own book!” Puschek said.
