An invitation-only event Thursday night featured local breweries and wineries and even an appearance by a famous chef.
Invited guests received a sneak preview Thursday night of the renovated Belle View grocery store at the Safeway Spring Social event. The gathering celebrated the grand re-opening of the store, which was closed for the past six months for renovations. Guests sampled some of Virginia's best beers and wines, and enjoyed hors d'oeuvres including some of Safeway’s best Consumer Brands products. Special guest Chef Huda, a recent contestant on ABC’s The Taste, served some of her specialty dishes and Veggy Art’s James Parker created art from produce. The Belle View Safeway will re-open on Friday morning. The store will reopen after being closed for the past six months for renovations, including an expansion of the store. This is the second expansion that the store has undergone since Safeway acquired the store from another grocer in August 1984 as a 28,000 square foot facility, according to a news release from Safeway. The previous expansion occurred in 1997, enlarging the interior to 39,888 square feet. After months of construction, the Belle View Safeway will re-open next month.
The Safeway at Belle View Shopping Center will reopen March 15, according to store employees. Safeway closed Sept. 29 for major renovations. The renovated store will have an additional 5,300 square feet, for a total of 45,000 square feet. The exterior of the store was completely revamped. The renovated store will feature new meat and seafood department service, a Starbucks kiosk and an expanded bakery. Six self-checkout stands will also be added. The weight-loss center has moved from the Huntington Gateway Shopping Center.
The Weight Watchers center has found a new home at the Belle View Shopping Center. The weight loss center has moved from its former location at the Huntington Gateway shopping center to the Belle View Shopping Center on Dec. 22, according to a note on the Weight Watchers Belle View website. The Weight Watchers is located at 1612 A Belle View Blvd.

New gym is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Snap Fitness 24-7 has opened in the Belle View Shopping Center, giving locals a new place to work out. Snap Fitness opened last Wednesday, and according to General Manager Milo Peña, business has been steady since the club opened last week. “There’s been a lot of interest in the community in our location,” Peña said. “People are trickling in to sign up and inquire about the club.” Snap Fitness is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The facility has strong security features including secure entry for members’ safety. The convenience of the Belle View location has been a big selling point for members. “It’s local, so you can walk, bike, or jog here,” Peña said. Grocery store facelift is coming along.
Patch stopped by this week to see how the Safeway renovation at Belle View Shopping Center is coming along. It seems to be progressing and workers at the project said this week that the target completion date is on track for March 2013. A local shopper looking at Christmas trees for sale in the nearby parking lot said she can't wait for the store to re-open. The grocery store began renovations in late September and is closed until renovations are complete. The new store will feature a new meat and seafood department, Starbucks coffee and a bakery. Construction and design has started on bakery in local shopping center.
Construction has started on Sweet Bake, a bakery that will open in the Belle View Shopping Center. A sign — "Sweet Bake" — can be seen hanging near the door of the new business. It will replace longtime bakers Brenners Bakery, which had a 60-year history in the community and was owned and managed by three generations of the Brenner family. KLNB Retail is handling the real estate management for the bakery. The company provides site selection, market research leasing, investment sales and land sale services to shopping center owners, developers and retailers across the Mid-Atlantic region. Renovated store will cover 45,000 square feet.
The Safeway supermarket at the Belle View Shopping Center will close for renovations at the end of September or the first part of October, a company spokesman said Tuesday. The supermarket is expected to reopen in March 2013, said Safeway spokesman Craig Muckle. Construction workers have already demolished a vacant spot next to the store and are renovating that section, he said. When renovations are complete, the wall that separates the two sections will be torn down to add additional square footage to the store.
