Open Invitation: Front Porch of Belle Haven Cape Welcomes All

Five-bedroom, four-bath home has seen several improvements over the years from various owners.

It was the front porch of the home at 6120 Woodmont Road that captured Lynn Eccleston. Stretching across the entire length of the 1980 Cape, it beckoned Lynn and her attorney husband, Hal Wegner, to enter. “If the house hadn’t had the porch, we wouldn’t even have gone into it,” said Lynn, a retired attorney. ”But when we walked in, we fell in love.” In fact, the couple was not even looking to buy a home when they visited Woodmont Road in 2004. They already owned a small Arts and Crafts style home a few miles away, and were visiting open houses just to get ideas for renovating and expanding that house. But the Cape was filled with light, and had great flow and room proportions. “We said to heck with it, this house is fabulous! Let’s move!” …

Carlyle Group Considering Traffic, Parking in Apartment Redevelopment

The company has been meeting with residents to discuss their concerns before submitting a rezoning application.

Possible redevelopment at Cityside Huntington Metro — formerly Belle Haven Towers — has some residents in the Huntington and Belle Haven areas concerned about parking and traffic. A representative for the Carlyle Group, property owners of the apartments, said they have been meeting with the community to hear their concerns and take suggestions before moving forward. Mark Viani, a partner at McGuire Woods, LLP and attorney for the Carlyle Group, said if the project is approved, they’ll work out parking issues as part of the process of completing the project. “One thing that we’re very sensitive to is access along Mount Eagle Drive. The main thing we’ve been doing is going around meeting with the surrounding communities and trying to find …

Huntington Community Prepares for Hurricane Sandy

Residents are buying supplies, moving their belongings from their basements and preparing for a possible flood.

With Hurricane Sandy heading toward the Mid-Atlantic region, Gov. Bob McDonnell has declared a state of emergency for Virginia. The Huntington and Belle Haven communities are staying informed and preparing in case the area floods as it has in 2006 and 2011 during major weather conditions. “There is awareness and people are monitoring it,” said Alan Ruof, floodwall coordinator for the Huntington Community Association. “We’ll have to wait it out and see what happens.” Tom Roltsch, who lives on Farrington Avenue in the Huntington community was preparing for the storm Friday afternoon even though his home is usually not affected by flooding during extreme weather. “I’m patching up all the holes in the concrete [driveway] and any place in the …

Any pedestrian that attempts to cross Route 1 on a regular basis is aware that it's often difficult in several areas. There are insufficient crosswalks, sidewalks and not enough time to cross with the "walk" sign and one has to hope that drivers allow pedestrians to cross. Many times, pedestrians with crutches, canes or wheelchairs cannot make it across the street safely - crosswalk or not.   more ›

Restaurant Inspections: KFC and Eastern Carry Out

The most recently available restaurant inspection reports from Sept. 26 to Oct. 4 in the Greater Alexandria area.

Between Sept. 26 and Oct. 4, quite a few restaurants along the Route 1 corridor were inspected. For prior restaurant inspection reports, click here. In Virginia, restaurant inspection reports aren't quite as simple as getting a letter grade or an easy to see number rating to post in the front window. That said, we all want to know how our favorite restaurants stack up on cleanliness and sanitation. Inspectors grade restaurants based on critical and non-critical violations. A "critical violation" is one that "poses a direct or immediate threat to the safety of the food being served." Non-critical violations are generally related to cleaning or maintenance. "Ideally, an operation would have no critical violations, or none which are not …

More Extreme Weather Linked to Climate Change

More flooding could occur along the Potomac River.

As area's heat index regularly exceeds 90 degrees, weather experts are telling us that the last year has been the warmest on record in the United States. Extreme weather events “of the recent past,” like heat waves and droughts, are caused by climate change, reported climate scientist James Hansen and several of his colleagues in an August 6 study. They maintain that in the last three decades, as the average temperature has risen, “the extremes have soared and now cover about 10 percent of the globe,” Hansen wrote in the Aug. 5 edition of the Washington Post. He is a scientist for the Goddard Institute for Space, NASA and a professor at Columbia University. This study follows an Environment Virginia study in July that found that incidences…
