'I have a lot of pent-up importance about myself as it relates to coaching and I'm going to take it out on your son. I think I am much better at it than I actually am.'
Sometimes life hands you a gift. My present arrived via email from my friend, Carol Hagen, who recently relocated from Northern Virginia to Charlottesville. Her subject line stated, “This was the first e-mail from Alex's new basketball coach — it's hilarious.” I replied back, “Not only is it hilarious, it’s my next column! I owe you one, and Coach Peter too.” So, without further ado, this might just be the best (and certainly most refreshing) introductory note ever written by a coach to his new team and it definitely sets the tone for a great season. Defending Patriot District champions win high-profile inter-district game over Mount Vernon
The West Potomac Wolverines beat the Mount Vernon Majors Thursday night by a score of 72-57, jump starting their new season. Senior point guard Daryl Copeland and senior guard Jalen Dawson, co-captains of the Wolverines, dominated the game from the first basket down to the last second of the game. Copeland nailed a three-pointer for the first score of the evening and held control of the ball with Dawson for most of the game. Throughout the first quarter, Potomac got into foul trouble, particularly against Mount Vernon forward Logan Beougher and guard Kevin Pyles. Repeated fouls plagued the Wolverines, who continued to rack up basket after basket but fought to maintain the lead as a result of their penalties, taking a 16-14 lead into the …
