Kashif Bashir facing slew of charges in Feb. 27 shooting incident that wounded Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy.
The suspect in the February shooting of Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy was indicted by an Alexandria Circuit Court grand jury Monday. Kashif Bashir, 27, is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The attempted capital murder charge and aggravated malicious wounding charge each carry sentences of 20 years to life. The firearm charges each carry three-year sentences. Trial dates will be chosen in the next 10 days. Bashir is being represented by the Alexandria Public Defender’s Office. The eight FCPD positions have not been cut to four in county budget cuts.
The station logistic technician (SLT) position has not been cut in FCPD county budget cuts. The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors recently approved fully funding all eight positions instead of eliminating four of the positions, said Captain Randy Joyce — commander of the Mount Vernon District Police Station — at the recent Citizen Advisory Committee meeting. One SLT is assigned to each of the eight district police stations. Because of budget cuts, the county was considering cutting it down to four SLTs for Fairfax County. SLTs are responsible for equipment and supplies inventory, maintaining police cruisers (average of 16 cars per week taken to and from the county garage for maintenance and repairs) and other duties around the district …

Fairfax County Fire and Rescue estimates the damages of a recent house fire in Mount Vernon at about $60,000, according to a recent news release. Firefighters responded to a call of a house fire at 8019 Seaton Drive in the Sherwood Crossing residential area Wednesday night. The fire department received the call at about 7:48 p.m. and arrived four minutes later. When firefighters arrived, they observed heavy smoke and fire coming from the back of the ranch-style, single family home. Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack to keep the fire from spreading to the attic of the home and were able to get the fire under control. FCPD provided information about the new police cruisers during the recent CAC meeting at Franconia District Police Station.
Fairfax County police officers are saying farewell to their old cruisers as the department purchases 127 Ford Police Interceptor sedans and utility vehicles in FY2013. Retired Lieutenant Chalrie Bond — who is now the director of the logistics and property division for the department — conducted a presentation during Wednesday night's Citizen Advisory Committee meeting. Bond said Ford Motor Vehicles recently discontinued the Crown Victoria Police Interceptors. The 2007 model was the last of its kind. FCPD has 1,500 vehicles — 762 which are assigned to eight stations, and Franconia District Police Station has 109 of those vehicles alone, Bond said. Robbery/Larceny Cigarettes were reported stolen from a business at 8:40 a.m. Tuesday on the 6800 block of Richmond Highway. According to the Fairfax County Police Department, two men entered the business. One of the men reached over a counter and took cigarettes, the second pushed a clerk and stole cigarettes. Fire department responded to a call for a house fire Wednesday night.
The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department responded to call for a house fire Wednesday night. Battalion Chief Brian Brendel said they received the call for the fire at 8000 Seaton Street in the Sherwood Crossing residential area around 7:48 p.m. Multiple units arrived at the seen of the fire four minutes after receiving the call. When firefighters arrived, they were able to get the fire out within a few minutes. Brendel said the fire started in the bedroom. Three of the four occupants of the single family home had already vacated the home. The fourth roommate was not home at the time of the incident. All four adults have been displaced by the fire. Fire investigators are currently trying to determine the cause of the fire.

MPO Greg Kottemann provided information about security habits and preventing crime during Tuesday's Citizen Advisory Committee meeting.
During Tuesday evening's Citizen Advisory Committee meeting at the Mount Vernon District Police Station, MPO Greg Kottemann gave the residents information about home security. Kottemann said burglaries are crimes that all districts and residents are trying to prevent in the county and all police districts deal with them regularly. "It is one of the hardest crimes to solve because normally no one is home at the time," he said. During his presentation, Kottemann also informed the residents of the four Ds of crime prevention: deter, detect, delay and deny. The crime prevention officer said it's important to take steps to deter criminals from targeting your communities. For example, Kottemann said it's helpful to organize a neighborhood watch …

Police charged Germarta Whitaker of Alexandria on Sunday.
Fairfax County police responded to a call of a shot person around 3:15 p.m. on Mother's Day in the 3000 block of Fordson Court, according to the recent daily activity report. The FCPD Public Information Office said the suspect and victim know each other, but police are unsure of what was said or what the two were talking about prior to the incident. A police investigation led to the arrest of Germarta Whitaker, 25, of Alexandria. Whitaker was charged with use of a firearm, robbery and malicious wounding.
