Myrle C. Record, of Alexandria, passed away on May 9 at 85 years old. Mr. Record served in the Coast Guard and later owned the Village Green Florist shop with his wife, according to his obituary posted on the Everly-Wheatley Funeral Home’s website. He is survived by his two daughters.
Mr. Bob Coyle, Col. John L.B. Bringham, passed away recently.
Mr. Bob Coyle, who “worked for many years for the betterment of the Mt. Vernon District along with his wife Carol,” has passed away. The Mount Vernon Council of Citizens' Associations sent out a notice to members about Mr. Coyle’s passing on Friday. A funeral will take place for Mr. Coyle on Saturday, view details of his service on Legacy.com. Storyteller, traveler, and beloved husband Colonel John L.B. Bringham passed away on March 31 in his Mount Vernon home, according to Jefferson Funeral Chapel. Col. Bringham will be buried with full military honors in June at Arlington National Cemetery.

Former Alexandria Gazette reporter Alberta Carten, 97, died April 18 in Alexandria, reports The Washington Post. She wrote for the Gazette in the 1960s and 1970s under the pen name Ann Robinson and covered social activities in the Belle Haven area. Carten was born in Clarksburg, W.Va. as Alberta Robinson Annon. She graduated from the University of Chicago in 1935. She was a member of Alexandria's Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill where she was a volunteer and choir singer. Carten also was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, according to her obituary.

Hayfield Farms resident and entrepreneur Adelaide 'Addie' Arthur died on Thursday, March 22, 2012. She was 73. Addie's family was the owner and operator of many businesses, opening the Dixie Pig BBQ restaurants, according to the Legacy obituary in The Washington Post. "People from all across the country have raved about the Dixie Pig, including weatherman Willard Scott," the Legacy obituary reads. "The restaurant was also featured on an episode of CSI." According to The Washington Post, the first Dixie Pig opened in 1924 on Powhatan Street in Alexandria. Now it's Vaso's Kitchen, but the old Dixie Pig signage still sits atop the restaurant. A memorial service for Cynthia Hull, executive director of United Community Ministries, will be held at 3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 31, at Bethlehem Baptist Church at 7836 Fordson Road. A reception will immediately follow the service. Cynthia’s family will be in Alexandria from out-of-town that weekend. They said they look forward to hearing stories about the way Hull touched the lives of many people within the community. During Cynthia Hull’s tenure as executive director of United Community Ministries, the number of clients the agency served nearly doubled, from 7,000 in 2007 to 13,000 five years later. Some former donors became clients. It took a woman like Hull to see UCM through a tough recession and stay on top. “She guided the agency through being able to expand in order to serve all those people with relatively flat funding, which is a tremendous accomplishment,” said Elizabeth McNally, UCM deputy executive director. Hull died March 16 at Mt. Desert Island Hospital in Bar Harbor, Maine, where she had been staying with her son. She had been diagnosed with cancer only Jan. 9. She was 62. Longtime Fort Hunt resident passed away on Sunday.
Maxwell James Gainer, 88, a 50 year resident of Hollin Hall in Alexandria, VA, passed away at his son’s home on February 26, 2012, after a short illness. Born in Clarksburg, WV, he served as a WWII P-38 fighter pilot in the US Army Air Corps in South East Asia. Professionally he was an optician in both Bristol and Old Town Alexandria , VA. He also served as a docent and airplane restorer at the National Air and Space Museum. He was a well-known maker of wooden toys and will be remembered by many for his appearances at local craft fairs. He passed out his small cars and trucks as Halloween treats and as rewards for well-behaved children in local restaurants.
