Only a grate fool wood let they kids eat food from school. make they lunchers youselves. it aintRead More rockem science.

When did a school lunch become such a primary event in a students' life? A home-served dinner shouldRead More be the primary meal event where the kiddies share daily events and nosh on the freshly prepared healthy foods selected by the nurturing adult in the home. School lunches should provide the kiddies with quick energy and inexpensive staples like mac 'n cheese, fries, chocolate milk, and ice cream. Volunteer in an Arlington public school cafeteria and see for yourself the food that is trashed daily that could probably alleviate the starving masses in India and Nigeria for a day! Kids also feel stigmatized by signing in with a school ID that designates free lunch recipients whereas the other kids produce the cash. School-provided breakfasts also rely on bagels and buns - all prone to add to obesity. Parents who don't take the time to provide breakfast to a kid are worthless.

I am 65 yrs old and remember eating in the school cafeteria for many years. The food was so so butRead More it was also a break from the old standby of PB&J or bologna sandwiches that was standard lunch fare in our household. My folks mixed it up but we also paid per day for every lunch we ate at school.. There is no right or wrong way to do this.. Make lunches at school cheaper or better tasting... My grand kids simply don't eat if the cafeteria serves crappy tasting food or if they don't like what I make for them at home.. Ergo, they don't eat anything from 7:30 in the morning when they have breakfast until at least 3:30 in the afternoon when they come home starving... I'm pretty sure most kids are like that since mom and dad are not there to insure that they eat.. Kids will be kids...

We have to make people aware that our State is run by public employee Unions and we need court casesRead More like today which ruled that the California Teacher Tenure rules are unconstitutional so that we can change laws and vote people out of office who do not represent the interests of the public who pay the taxes.

Something that is interesting to note is that high school grads are going to four year universitiesRead More and studying subject that isn't marketable. While on the other hand you have people getting vocational training at vocational schools that essentially guarantees them a job out of school that will make them 'x' amount of money. So it isn't that college degrees are worthless, some are. It is also said that sometimes trade school is the right choice! The answer is that kids who get into these gifted & talented schools (now called Level 4) areRead More very bright, high achieving kids.
Mozart May 4, 2014 at 11:58 am
Jody - Lake Braddock, like the other schools with more than 10 admits to TJ, is an AAP center.Read More What's notable is that four AAP centers (Glasgow, Hughes, Sandberg and South County) apparently had fewer than 10 admits to TJ this year, whereas Carson MS had over 80.
Jody May 8, 2014 at 09:06 am
Yes, and two schools sent over 50 kids. These schools must be doing their job extremely well andRead More probably also have a large pool of high achieving kids in their areas. I assume (maybe I shouldn't) that there is an objective selection process in place that awards placement purely on merit and achievement. These numbers probably reveal that a quota system isn't applied for the sake of "fairness." That's a good thing.

Do you know what the criteria was for ranking? It would be interesting to see how many of theseRead More schools have an entrepreneurship focus.

Summer will wait one more day.
D. Brown April 12, 2014 at 07:28 am
Why bother? The books and supplies will be packed away. It is just a waste of people's time.
Rolling Thunder 2013 April 12, 2014 at 12:14 pm
@D. Brown. I thoroughly agree. Waste of time and money.
afsheri April 12, 2014 at 12:38 pm
Agree - what is the point? More money spent on opening for a few hours for zero productivity. AddRead More some Saturdays to the schedule between now and then.

Our lagging performance has everything to do with the idiots running Henrdon Elementary. Lots of forRead More sale signs going up this spring as a result! Nice job HE!

Our lagging performance has everything to do with the idiots running Henrdon Elementary. Lots of forRead More sale signs going up this spring as a result! Nice job HE! I see Brenda Wichman was nice enough to perpetuate the whine about the poor kiddies having to stand and walk on snow at the bus stop or on their way to school! OH THE HORROR! Man some parents are freakin...well, you know.

Of course schools should be closed if road conditions endanger school children.
Kathie Diapoulis March 16, 2014 at 07:22 pm
I just got an email from Fairfax County School stating that they were closed tomorrow.
West Potomac High School announced Friday they have hired a new head football coach, Jeremiah Ross, who comes to the Wolverines from Caroline County High School in Milford, Va.
Wildermann March 1, 2014 at 12:35 pm
Wow, such fanfare over a new football coach. If there is a real balance between sports and academicsRead More in FCPS shouldn't the school also have meet and greet days for a new academic instructor?

Since they are not going to change the date of regularly scheduled testing I don't think that makingRead More up the days do anything good for the students. Unless these days can be made up in advance of the test (sol, ect) so my vote it to not extend school!
MomtoB February 18, 2014 at 03:09 pm
Most schools around the world have classes year round. We have 180 days and then aren't even goingRead More to make up the ten missed days. It's ridiculous. These kids need to be in school. Yes make up the days, go to a longer school year. Make Monday's full day, take away teacher work days and whatever else it takes. There were talks about starting before Labor Day every year - why didn't that take place? Our kids are missing out on education and they need to be in school more to make up for it.
Meg February 19, 2014 at 03:43 pm
Maybe schools should have thought of this before classes were cancelled. There's no reason kidsRead More can't go to school because of the threat of snow. And "storms" where we get 2 inches and classes cancelled are JOKE. And I'm sorry when temps are in the low 20's with windchills in the teens or single digits - that's what layers are for... wear winter clothing and dress for the weather. I have absolutely no sympathy for the kids needing to be in school longer.
