Doggie Day Swim, 6th Annual Scavenger Hunt and 'The Children's Hour'

Have fun this weekend with some of these local events.

There is absolutely no reason for you to stay home with nothing to do. The weather this weekend is expected to be quite amazing, and Sunday is the first day of autumn. So get out and get involved in one — or a couple — of these interesting events in the northern Virginia area.

Shop Old Town.
 The Old Town Boutique District is holding its 6th annual Scavenger Hunt. From Friday to Sunday, visit all of the Old Town Boutique District stores and get your passport stamped to receive a swag bag and a chance to win prizes.

Condo owner? New to your condominium board
 or seeking to expand your knowledge of condominium living? Join the class "The Essentials of Community Association Leadership” offered by the City of Alexandria and Arlington County. The class will be held at Fairlington Community Center, 3308 S. Potomac Yard update.
 Alexandria City Council will host a Potomac Yard development update and bus tour from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. This meeting will precede the city’s regularly scheduled Saturday morning public hearing, now scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. There will be a short presentation at 8 a.m., with the tour departing at 8:30 a.m. from the Pulte Homes sales office at 2400 Main Line Blvd, and returning at approximately 10 a.m. 

Petticoats, cloaks and a Brunswick or two will walk the colonial catwalk 
Saturday. From 10:30 a.m. to noon, the Carlyle House Magnolia Terrace will be transformed into a runway celebrating fashion from the colonial and early American period. Living history interpreters will model clothing from the later half of the 18th Century and the early 19th Century while historic fashion experts explain the changes in fashion during that period. Carlyle House, 121 N. Fairfax St., Old Town.

Treat your pooch to a late summertime dip
 at the City of Alexandria’s 9th annual Doggie Day Swim on Saturday, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Old Town Pool, 1609 Cameron St. Following the end of the summer pool season, this annual event provides dogs with the opportunity to swim and play games in one of the city’s pools. Admission is free! Register Online Now  (activity number 140950).

Get dirty by cleaning up.
 Volunteer in the Ocean Conservancy’s 28th annual International Coastal Cleanup this Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at Oronoco Bay Park in concert with the City of Alexandria. Volunteers meet at the end of Madison Street near the Rowing Clubhouse in Old Town. Trash bags and gloves will be provided.

Drama and tension abound in "The Children’s Hour,"
 a play by Lillian Hellman and performed by the Port City Playhouse, 1819 N. Quaker Lane. The play runs through Sept. 28. This weekend, performances are at 8 p.m. Friday, and 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday. Questions? Email info@portcityplayhouse.org.

The T.C. Williams High School varsity football team opens its home season
 when it plays host to Langley High School at 3 p.m. Saturday at Parker-Gray Memorial Stadium (3330 King St.). Both teams enter the game with 1-1 records. Admission is $5.

Books! Books! Books!
 The McLean branch of the American Association of University Women will hold its 44th used book sale Friday through Sunday at the McLean Community Center, 1234 Ingleside Ave. in McLean, Va. 703-527-4206.

Beckett’s Celtic Festival
 takes place from noon to 7 p.m. at the Village at Shirlington in Arlington, 4200 Campbell Ave. This inaugural event includes five live bands (The Danny Burns Band, The Aine O’Doherty Band, Shamrogues, Brendan’s Voyage and Off the Boat), food and drink, dancers and pipe bands and more.

Join 40 Maryland wineries
 at the 30th annual Maryland Wine Festival. The event is Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. with admission fees ranging from $20 to $30. The event will be held at the Carroll County Farm Museum in Westminster, about 45 minutes from Washington, DC. Marylandwine.org/mwf 

Clean up Cherry Hill Park in Falls Church

Shoot some hoops. Adult drop-in basketball
 at Arlington’s Walter Reed Community Center from 10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. Saturdays. Games are timed at 13 minutes or the first team to score 11 points. For more information, call 703-228-5923.

Enjoy the musical performance ‘moment’ by Steve Antosca
 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. in Georgetown University's Walsh Building lobby. The performance runs 4 p.m. to 4:20 p.m. by the Georgetown University Orchestra accompanied by electronic musician William Brent. A panel discussion follows from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Open to the public. The Walsh Building is located at 1221 37th St., NW, Washington, D.C.
