Kingstowne Girl Scouts Collecting Christmas Gifts For Children Around The World

Fairfax County Girl Scouts will continue collecting items through Monday for Christmas gifts packed into shoe boxes that will be shipped around the world.

The Girl Scouts Council of the Nation’s Capital has partnered with the Samaritan’s Purse International Relief organization for the annual Operation Christmas Child national collection, according to Nichole Tucker, a spokesperson for the Girl Scout troops involved.

"Each day more girls volunteer to help out at national collection week with the desire to bring change," Tucker said. "In this case, using something as simple as shoe boxes, the Girl Scouts strive to make a difference in their community and in the world."

Girl Scouts from Service Unit 5306 kicked off the Operation Christmas Child event Oct. 5 when they gathered, packed and shipped dozens of boxes filled with gifts to children in the Dominican Republic.

The effort has continued since then, culminating with a collection at Calvary Road Baptist Church, in Cottage "A," on Beulah Road in Kingstowne. Collection hours are:

  • Saturday, Nov. 23, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday, Nov. 24, from 2 to 6 p.m.
  • Monday, Nov. 25, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The shoe boxes filled with gifts — such as small toys, school supplies, toiletries and personal notes — will be shipped to children in South America, Asia and Africa. For more information about about Samaritan's Purse and the type of items to donate, visit the relief organization's website.
