Alexandria Kids Raise Money For Typhoon Victims

Kids Sending Smiles recently baked cookies and raked leaves in Landsdowne to help typhoon victims. The students have raised money for other projects both locally and globally.

Elementary students from Greater Alexandria recently held a bake sale and raked leaves to raise money for Philippine typhoon victims.

Kids Sending Smiles held their fundraising events Nov. 16 in the Landsdowne community in Alexandria. The kids’ efforts raised more than $800 for Philippine typhoon relief, according to Laurie Underwood, the group's spokesperson.

The proceeds were donated to Feed the Hungry Inc., an organization working on the ground in the Philippines to provide emergency food and other assistance to typhoon victims, Underwood said.

Kids Sending Smiles was established two years ago, and has held fundraising events for numerous causes in the Alexandria area and around the world. The students recently held a 5K race that raised nearly $1,500 for breast cancer research, Underwood said.

Earlier this year, Kids Sending Smiles helped a local toddler with epilepsy get a service dog and funded meals for Oklahoma families impacted by devastating tornadoes. The groups also has supported a local food pantry, Hurricane Sandy victims and orphaned children in Peru.
