Wolverines Steal One from Jaguars

Wolverines score two unanswered goals to hand Falls Church 2-1 loss

West Potomac scored twice in the final 25 minutes and rallied to a 2-1 victory against Falls Church on Tuesday night. The win gives the Wolverines a 3-0 start for the second straight season, with all of those wins coming against National District teams. Lindsey Sawzcuk and Orion Taylor scored for the Wolverines, and Brooke Bean provided the Jaguars their goal.

The Jaguars held the momentum after a dominant first half when Bean opened the scoring on a well struck free kick from just outside the left corner of the box in the 48th minute. Kim Gianturco nearly doubled the lead just over a minute later with a shot from inside 10 yards that narrowly went over the crossbar.

Sawzcuk drew West Potomac even in the 56th minute on a drive from a sharp angle from the right side of the box that beat Falls Church keeper Erika Brent. From then on, it was nearly all West Potomac, as it was the Wolverines who nearly struck again shortly after when Sawzcuk and Madison Daley both had quality looks at the goal.

“I think after that first goal we realized that we had to pick it up and step up our game,” Sawzcuk said.

The Wolverines did just that. In the 62nd minute, Taylor broke the tie from nearly the same spot as Sawzcuk.

“That was a very poor first half for us,” West Potomac Coach Garrett Hubbard said. “Once we actually started to play like we can play, finding people’s feet, putting some passes together, we were able to do much better in the last 30 minutes or so. I’m just happy we were able to get two goals.”

Falls Church created three more opportunities to draw even but couldn’t convert. In the 64th minute, Thea Robinson possessed the ball in the box with one defender to beat, but couldn’t quite gain enough control to earn a shot. The Wolverines nearly put the game out of reach in the 69th minute when they created a two on one, but Brent got all the way across the goal to make a save.

Bean had the Jaguars’ best chance in the 71st minute when she had a clear path to the goal, but pulled up for a shot from nearly 25 yards out that sailed just over the crossbar.

In the 78th minute, Abigail Michael’s throw-in nearly reached West Potomac keeper Caroline Kelly and was almost put in by a West Potomac player’s defensive header, but again cleared the crossbar by less than a foot.

With an identical schedule to last year, the Wolverines will look to improve on last year's mark. Next up are matches with South County, Herndon, and Annandale, a stretch in which the Wolverines were outscored 4-0 in 2010 while amassing an 0-2-1 record.

“We have a very young team, so it’s definitely nice for some girls to get some goals and get some wins,” Hubbard said.

The loss drops the Jaguars to 0-4 as they begin district play at Washington-Lee on Thursday.
