Wolverines fall to Majors in Season Opener

Out-shooting Mount Vernon not enough for West Potomac in loss, 4-1

The Mount Vernon Majors ran a 4-1 victory Monday against West Potomac High.

“They were just running their hardest, technically and physically sound, just going, going, going,” West Potomac Coach Andrew Peck said. “We probably had 20 shots on goal and we scored once. We should have had four or five in the first half alone.”

The Wolverines had gone scoreless in the first half, and though forward star James Taylor had led his team to outshoot the Majors, none of their shots got past Majors keeper, Lucas Belanger.

Although West Potomac carried the momentum for the first 20 minutes of the second half, Mount Vernon strategized to take Taylor out of his game.

“Basically what we tried to do is constantly have someone on him [Taylor] so when he looked up there was a maroon jersey in his face,” Mount Vernon Coach Robert Garza said. “We all know he is a left foot so we kept him to his right, and he got a little frustrated. But don’t get me wrong, he is a heck of a ball player.”

Majors player Erik Rodriguez did a strong job clearing and tackling opposing players for the ball and kicking it deep to his front four. Rodriguez flicked a grounder through the keeper’s legs for Mount Vernon’s second goal with 20 minutes left in the game.

Less than three minutes had passed when Mount Vernon sophmore Kargbo blasted the ball inside the left post from ten yard out for his second score of the game.

“I just happened to be in the right place at the right time and capitalized on it,” Kargbo said.

Major’s defender Damarco Dacosta added a fourth goal to seal things up and put the first game of the season in the books.

“We wanted to win and were passing the ball around but we just didn’t finish” Atta-Otoo said. “We just have to go out and work harder because we can’t win, if we don’t score. That’s just how it is.”

Peck said he does not view this season as rebuilding but instead prefers a different term.

“I don’t call it rebuilding, I call it refreshing. Theses guys have been playing together since fifth grade and we have a lot of young talent that will keep West Potomac rolling.”

West Potomac plays at home against Edison at 7 p.m. on March 18.
