West Potomac Track Teams Finish Strong At Northern Region Indoor Track Championship

Wolverine women place seventh, men sixth at regional championships

West Potomac’s indoor track and field teams turned in solid performances in Saturday’s Northern Region Track and Field Championships on the campus of George Mason University

Considering the amount of runners that schools like T.C. Williams and Edison brought to Saturday’s meet, West Potmac’s participation seemed minimal when compared to them. However, the Wolverines did more than hold their own in finishing in the meet’s top seven. The West Potomac Women finished seventh overall with 32 points and the Men finished sixth overall with 40 points.

“We didn’t bring that many individuals to the meet. The best thing for us is most of the kids that competed today scored points to add to the team score. I think that’s pretty good considering the number of athletes we had,” West Potomac coach Jenn Dietz said following the meet.

Seven West Potomac runners qualified for states, with two placing first in their event. Khoki Bernier placed first in the men’s 1000-meter and Sarah Jane Underwood placed first in the women’s 1000-meter.

In addition to the two first place finishes, the rest of the Wolverine state qualifiers did well.

Tyrone Jenkins placed fourth in the men’s triple jump while also placing third in the 500-meter dash.

Linda Kinston placed second in the shot put, Toni O’Boyle placed sixth in the 55-meter hurdles and Dale Lescher placed third in the women’s 1000-meter run.

Also, the Men’s 4x800-meter relay (Mark Hanak, Khoki Bernier, Marc Lotterie, Ben Aleixo) placed first, qualifying for states in the process.

Following the meet, Dietz spoke highly of West Potomac senior, Khoki Bernier, “Khoki had a really great day. First of all, running on the 4x8 [relay], then coming out of the slower section to win the 1000, it was a good last regional meet for him.”

The Wolverines who qualified for states will compete next Friday in Hampton, Virginia.
