She is the first Division I lacrosse signee in Wolverine history.

West Potomac senior Margaret Kerr signed a National Letter of Intent earlier this month, to play lacrosse at Marquette University in the fall. School officials believe she is the first student to sign with Division 1 lacrosse team in Wolverine history.

Marquette University is a Catholic, Jesuit university located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.  At Marquette, Kerr will play center midfield.

Marquette’s women’s lacrosse team, which is a member of the Big East Conference, will begin playing a full competitive schedule in the 2012-13 academic year, according to a statement released by the West Potomac athletics department. The team will begin Big East play the following year.

Though Kerr says she is excited to be playing Lacrosse at Marquette, she will miss her friends at West Potomac.

“Marquette is so far away. A lot of the girls that go to west Potomac go to the Virginia schools,” said Kerr.

As a midfielder, Kerr was the leading point scorer for the Wolverines her junior year and the third leading point scorer her sophomore year, according to the athletics department.

Kerr earned a three-year point total of 97 entering her senior year as well as a career draw control percentage of over 60 percent. Kerr started every game through all three seasons of her career and earned.  The team currently has a 6- 3 season.

“We are like a big family,” she said of her teammates. “We work really well together.”

Kerr began her lacrosse career in the third grade as member of the Fort Hunt Youth Athletic Association team. The current West Potomac head lacrosse coach, Lori Botha, was also her coach in the third grade.

“So it came full circle so that was kind of cool,” said Kerr.

She plans to major in Marquette’s business program, where she hopes to pursue a career in marketing or international business.
