West Potomac Athlete to Play in U.S. Rugby All-American Stars and Stripes Game

West Potomac High School senior and varsity football player Darien Pickett will play in the 2013 High School All-American Stars vs. Stripes Game Saturday in Greeley, Colo. The best boys and girls have been selected for this competition from the seven  Regional All-Star Tournaments across the United States.

Back in April, Pickett traveled to England to play on the U.S. HSAA rugby team. Because of athletic performance this past spring, Pickett was chosen as one of the top 50 of the nation's best athletes to compete in Colorado this weekend.

Back in January, Pickett's Fort Hunt Rugby Coach, Dale Roach, said the competition to be chose for the U.S. All-American team was tough.

"The competition was fierce,” Roach said. “He competed against 120 other kids from all over the country, all the best players tried out to get on a team with 25 spots."

Players competing this weekend arrived on Tuesday and began working with top coaches, medical staff fitness and nutrition specialist and college counseling support. The boys and girls will be divided into a "Stars" team and a "Stripes" team to compete in the game Saturday morning.
