Liberty-Patriot District Wins Northern Region Boys Basketball All-Star Game

The Liberty-Patriot district all-stars beat the Concorde-National all-stars 128-95

Lake Braddock forward Brian Freedman treated Saturday’s Northern Region Boys Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game like any other.

Diving on the floor, grabbing loose rebounds, making an impact.

Freedman was a big reason why the Liberty and Patriot districts’ all-stars beat the Concorde/National all-stars, 128-95, in the game at Wakefield High School in Arlington.

Freedman led all scorers with 20 points and was credited with 14 rebounds, and he took home the MVP honors.

“He did exactly what he’s done all year,” said T.C. Williams’ Julian King, who coached the Liberty/Patriot squad. “He’s a workhorse.”

Freedman, still undecided on his college plans but hoping to play Division II basketball – he is eyeing the University of Tampa at present – didn’t have a problem adjusting to a team filled with guys he’s normally competing against.

“Most of the players out there are very good, so it didn’t take long to mesh together,” he said.

The Liberty/Patriot all-stars dominated almost the entire way. They held a 37-21 lead after one quarter, and were up 64-44 at halftime – South County’s Nik Biberaj (14 points) nailed a 3-pointer at the buzzer for the Liberty/Patriot squad.

Liberty/Patriot led 95-73 after the third quarter.

Other prolific scorers for the Liberty/Patriot squad were South Lakes’ Joe Daye (16 points), T.C. Williams’ Rick Matthews (15) and Tyrell Sitton (12), and West Potomac’s Jalen Dawson (10).

The lead scorer for the Concorde/National team was Jesse Konadu of Mount Vernon, who scored 16 points. Others in double figures: Falls Church’s Nizar Alamin (15), Robinson’s Mike Rice (14) and Oakton’s Adi Hajrovic (12).

Neither coach was yelling and screaming much. Williams’ King admitted that he had to adjust his usually intense sideline demeanor. Edison’s Terry Henderson coached the Concorde/National squad.

“All these guys are friends and have been playing against each other for four years, on the playgrounds and in AAU,” Henderson said. “They all wanted a chance to get together on the court at some point.”

Activities on Saturday also included a 3-point shooting contest and a slam dunk competition.

Centreville’s Cam Owens won the 3-point shooting contest, hitting 19 3-pointers in 90 seconds in the final round. Finishing in second place was Herndon’s Austin Hamilton; Hamilton only hit four 3-pointers in the first minute of the final round and then went on a tear, finishing with 16.

The slam dunk contest was won by Sitton, who beat out teammate Matthews. Sitton’s winning move: Slamming the ball off the wall behind the backboard, then finishing a jam.
