Braddock Bruins Break Losing Streak Against Wolverines in Girls Basketball

Defense leads Bruins to first Patriot District win

Lake Braddock beat the West Potomac Wolverines, 41-19, on Tuesday, ending its two-game losing streak and pushing Potomac to its third straight loss.

The Wolverines could not establish any offensive presence all night. In the first half, West Potomac scored only four points, including a goose egg in the second quarter. Meanwhile, Braddock's Marcia Altman and Morgan Stearns scored most of the 13 points for their team in the first quarter.

Hard work defensively by Tayla Dawson and Lindsey Sawzuk kept Lake Braddock's offense relatively calm during the first half. The second quarter saw only eight additional points for the Bruins, but were still able to build their lead through their defense.

In the second half, resounding moves by a now-waking-up offense for the Bruins saw a series of points from Collins, Caroline Young and Altman. Heading into the fourth, Lake Braddock held a commanding 35-13 lead.

In the final quarter of the game, more than two minutes passed before either team was able to score. Jones led a mini-rally for West Potomac, but it was short lived. The Bruins closed out the game 41-19.

Lake Braddock Coach Leigh Kampman was ecstatic about the much-needed win.

"Our defensive intensity really won us this game," Kampman said. "The win will give the girls some confidence, which we need for district play ahead."

Both teams will play in holiday tournaments next week. After that, they resume their regular playing schedules on Jan. 4, when Lake Braddock squares off against West Springfield and West Potomac looks to beat Robinson.
