Working on your taxes? Your library can help!

The Sherwood Library staff have put out the first of our federal tax forms; instruction booklets will arrive in February. Generally, we carry the basic 1040 forms. The Commonwealth of Virginia does not send tax forms to the library for distribution. However, stop by the information desk, where we can provide copies of many forms to photocopy from reference publications at 15 cents a page.

This year again, the wonderful volunteers from AARP will be at Sherwood Library to help you fill out your forms.  They will be here from February 1 through April 15. Their hours are: 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 8 p.m, Monday through Thursday. They will also be here Friday and Saturday from 10:15 a.m. to 2 p.m. Please plan to arrive at least an hour before the session closes. The volunteers have an unmanned phone number, 571-882-9374. On days the public schools are closed for inclement weather, the AARP volunteers don’t come to the library. Please be sure to come with a picture ID, your Social Security Card, your W-2s and any other tax documents you have received. Check out their requirements at: http://aarp.org/taxaide.

Assistance for those with incomes under $52,000 is also available at several places in Northern Virginia including Kingstowne Library.  For other locations, check www.nvacash.org.

The library has books on doing your taxes available for checkout.  Information staff will bring you to our 343 subject area for tax guidebooks. Remember that books can go out of date and you should check the official information at www.irs.gov  or www.tax.virginia.gov to be sure your material is current and accurate.  Our website will guide you to a range of information about forms and help at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/internet/taxforms.htm
