Get your “paws” on some books this summer with the library’s Summer Reading Program

What activities do you associate with summer? Perhaps swimming, barbequing or going on a family vacation? Not surprisingly, we at the library think of READING and we encourage you and your children to read with us this summer!

Held in cooperation with Fairfax County Public Schools, “Paws to Read” the library’s Summer Reading Program runs June 20-Aug. 30 and invites students from preschool to high school to keep reading during the summer. To participate, register online at www.fairfaxcounty.gov/library/srp or visit a branch beginning June 20.

Preschoolers through sixth graders read 15 books (kids can have books read to them), and teens in grades 7-12 read eight books. Kids can read any books they choose. Those who finish reading the required number of books by August 30 will receive a coupon book with a variety of free prizes and discounts. The coupons feature items and activities such as ice cream, pizza, craft supplies, bowling and laser tag as well as admission to some of the Fairfax County Park Authority’s RECenters and nature centers. More than 25 businesses and organizations have donated over $4.5 million worth of coupons for these free and reduced priced items to reward Fairfax County students for reading during the summer.

The library also offers an array of events to entertain and educate children at library branches all summer long. Sherwood Regional Library will be hosting the Blue Sky Puppet Theatre, Storytime and Rhyme with Kofi Dennis, Reptiles Alive, a Robotics Challenge with Digital Kidz and many more. Throughout the summer on this blog we will highlight some of these programs as well as some other special activities we have planned.

A full list of Sherwood’s events, with dates and registration information is online or in the Free Events calendar available in branches. All events and activities are free, but often fill up quickly; registration is required. Please sign up online or at the branch beginning two weeks before an event. As always, if you have any questions, please visit the Sherwood information desk, or give us a call at 703-765-3645.
