Celebrate 75 years of libraries in Fairfax County

Everyone loves a party and this is one that lasts all year! Fairfax County Public Library celebrates its 75th birthday this year with events throughout the county. Sherwood Regional celebrated its 40th anniversary a few years ago with music and programs. Several of our Mount Vernon customers began the festivities when they opted for the new, elegant black library cards with the diamond motif that have been available since earlier this year.

Here at Sherwood, we will be hosting a visit in March by MSNBC political analyst and NPR commentator Maria Teresa Kumar www.shesource.org/experts/profile/maria-teresa-kumarOther events are being planned and we welcome your suggestions.

Sherwood staff members are building a timeline of branch history. We welcome any photos or anecdotes you might care to share. For instance, we often get calls from a neighbor who, forty plus years ago, walked the neighborhood in the heat of summer to get signatures on a petition to build the library that became Sherwood Regional. If you have a story to tell about Sherwood over the years, please let branch manager Denise Morgan know at denise.morgan@fairfaxcounty.gov. Library staff is hoping to film oral histories throughout the county.
