Thumbs, Money and Leaves?

Sherwood Library is looking for volunteer gardeners to help beautify our grounds.

If you guessed Things That Are Green as the common thread in the title of this post, congratulations!

You are creative, detail-oriented and generous. OR, maybe not. If you are reading this blog, I’m guessing you are a neighbor of Sherwood Library, or some other branch of the Fairfax County Public Library.

You may remember an earlier post here about our to help with drainage in our parking lot. Well, as spring approaches, our other plants revive, too. Tree branches sprout leaves, and plants push up through the soil, though to the gardeners amongst us, it may look unkempt.

Yes, we have contract gardeners who mulch and mow. Sherwood Regional Library is lucky to have an annual visit by local Green Thumbs, coordinated through Barbara Sullivan of Mount Vernon at Home, who work hard in the spring to make our grounds look great. Last year, for instance, they provided pavers and plants for the area nearest our mailbox on the parking-lot side of the building. If you are interested in volunteering with the group on April 21, please call Barbara at 703-303-4060 about this year’s visit.

If you have a few hours on a continuing basis, and a thumb that is even remotely green, I’m hoping to gather a group of volunteer gardeners (constant or otherwise) who will enjoy the company of others as they trim back the Sherwood Forest to reveal a tidy landscape within.

If this sounds like your cup of (green) tea, plant yourself by your phone and call me, Denise Morgan, branch manager, at 703-718-8208 or email denise.morgan@fairfaxcounty.gov. While I dig the idea of one meeting to greet potential putterers, hours thereafter are VERY flexible.

I’ll “hoe-p” to hear from gardeners who weed, as well as read, for shear enjoyment.
