If you love computers and technology and are looking for a way to give back to your community, please consider becoming a volunteer tutor at the Sherwood Regional Library.

Recently, the Sherwood Regional Library staff conducted a survey of how our Mount Vernon neighbors use the library. While an overwhelming majority came to borrow or return materials, the next largest group is our technology users. These neighbors use our wireless with their own equipment, or our desktop computers, or they take training from volunteer computer tutors. While it’s common for families to have their own computers and become proficient in their use, Sherwood also serves many customers who don’t own computers and need help to apply for jobs, communicate with family and friends around the world, and complete other tasks.

We rely on volunteers to help our customers achieve these goals. These tutors provide each student with a one hour, hands-on session. No special training is required, just general familiarity with Microsoft software. Some tutors will work with a learner’s personal laptop, but that isn’t a requirement. Equipped with 16 computers, a printer and a copy machine, the library’s technology lab is a second home to many local residents who value computer access and appreciate helpful customer service. Not too long ago, a customer who had lost his house to a fire was able to obtain a temporary driver’s license and have a permanent one mailed to his new address. All this was done using one of the lab computers and with the help of the lab assistant.

We hope you will consider joining this group of volunteers. Because many of our customers speak other languages, we are particularly interested in recruiting those with world language skills. This is a great opportunity for those who want coaching experience for their resumes. For more information please call Deepa Madhavan at 703-718-8219 or email at deepa.madhavan@fairfaxcounty.gov.
