Sherwood Celebrates a Milestone Anniversary

The Sherwood Library celebrates its 40th anniversary on September 17. We have lots of activities and events planned so you can celebrate with us!

This week you may have heard about the annual Mindset List compiled by Beloit College in Milwaukee. The list is a reminder that one generation's reference points mean little or nothing to the members of the next one. For instance, this year's college freshmen, born in 1993, had televisions that never had dials and "Amazon" for them is the online retailer, not the river in South America. The complete list can be found here, http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/.

Today's college freshmen here in Mount Vernon would not remember a time without the large building that currently houses Sherwood  Regional  Library. The building opened in 1971 and was renovated in 1992. And wouldn't it be fun to think about the changes here in the  library and the community in those forty years? For one thing, we added a Tech Lab on the second floor and a Read to Me room just off the children's area. New residents might know us best for hosting the Farmers' Market every week.

We will be celebrating our anniversary on September 17 with entertainment and refreshments for adults and children. Do you have particular memories you'd like to share? Perhaps an anecdote about the book chain that delivered books for the re-opening? Maybe some photographs of a holiday open house or author visit? Please take a moment to send me an email at denise.morgan@fairfaxcounty.gov  or leave a phone message at 703-718-8208. Perhaps your children would like to draw a picture of a library event or tell a bit about their favorite book. We're hoping to set up this display the week before the anniversary, beginning September 10 with performances by the Heritage Harmony Singers and Rocknoceros. We know you'll want to be part of our celebration!
